Sep, 2001 : Microsoft to Rewrite IIS, Release Patches
📅 - Microsoft (microsoft.com) has decided to take action after Gartner security analyst John Pescatore resolved that businesses should replace Microsoft's server, IIS, for more stable alternatives, reported the Register yeterday.
MS head office is telling its sales channel that version 6.0 of IIS will berewritten, and will introduce security measures along the way, because, according to it Microsoft, "we also realize customers cannot wait thatlong."
Even more surprising, MS is even considering leaving the Web server, alongwith several other services, uninstalled by default.
The comments were discovered in a bulletin sent to its sales staff andresellers, and reported by Andrew Orlowski of the UK's Register.
Microsoft added that "'ripping and replacing' IIS is an over-reaction and amore costly alternative - especially considering that vulnerabilities existin alternate platforms," it said.
In the bulletin, Gartner said Microsoft's chances of hitting its deadline ispoor, estimating an 80 per cent chance of the rewritten IIS 6.0 not makingit out of the door by the end of next year.
The report indicates that the rewrite of IIS is "partial" and that onefeature of the server in particular bothers IIS users. The new device driverwill be named http.sys, and Microsoft claims it increases SSL performance byup to 900 percent, while doubling standard cgi performance.
Until it is released, Microsoft is telling its sales force to report thatthe following options are under consideration:
An IIS Lockdown tool to be included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3An early release of .NET Server's Auto Update tool, so patches canbe pushed down to the serverRemoving services from future versions of Windows .NET server, withIIS being one of the services disabled by default
