Sep, 2001 : BCE Becomes First Canadian Member of Liberty Alliance


📅 - Bell Canada Enterprises (bce.ca) has signed a letter ofintent to join other industry leaders in the Liberty Alliance Project(libertyalliance.org), launched yesterday to create an open standard for single sign-on for network identity. The open system will enable Internet users to carry a single, secure sign-on identity across all devices and all interactions on the Internet.

"As a charter member of the Alliance, BCE will help pioneer the creation ofan open system that will increase accessibility and ensure the security ofpersonal information for consumers on any device connected to the Internet,"said Michael Sabia, president of Bell Canada Enterprises. "Customers andmerchants are grappling with the complexity of multiple user signatures andthe lack of universal open standards," said Mr. Sabia. "As more people aredoing more things using more kinds of Internet devices, such as mobilephones, hand-held devices, computers, and televisions, consumers andbusinesses alike are seeking simpler and more secure ways to interact withthe Internet. The Liberty Alliance Project is a significant and importantstep in this direction."
BCE will become the only Canadian charter member of the Alliance and willwork along side more than two dozen other global industry leaders. TheAlliance will develop a global standard for accessing communications systemsfrom any device that connects to the Internet through a single sign-onsolution. This system is intended to provide consumers with a convenient wayof identifying themselves, while allowing them to maintain control of theirpersonal information. The Alliance will develop the system in an openenvironment to promote development and healthy competition.
Over the next 60 days BCE will work with the other members of the Allianceto finalize the terms of membership, the Alliance's organizational structureand the process for the development of the intellectual property. It isexpected that members will provide both financial resources and personnel tothe alliance.
