Oct, 2001 : Nortel to Provide Qwest With Voice and Data Network

📅 October 15, 2001 - Nortel Networks (networknetworks.com) is deploying for Qwest Communications International, Inc. (qwest.com -> lumen.com) a new, packet-based networkinfrastructure that Qwest intends to use to replace traditional,circuit-switched networks throughout its 14-state region.

Featuring Nortel Networks carrier-class softswitch, this network is alreadycarrying live traffic in Boise, Idaho, making Qwest the first ILEC(incumbent local exchange carrier) to serve customers using a voice overpacket network architecture. This represents a critical milestone in Qwest'sdrive to bring Voice over IP service to all of its customers.
"Qwest is planning to expand its packet-switched deployments into othermajor metro areas within its 14-state territory," said Augie Cruciotti,executive vice president, local networks, Qwest Communications. Nortel Networks is supplying Qwest with products from the Nortel Networksvoice over packet portfolio, including the carrier-grade softswitch,Succession Communication Server 2000, and trunking gateways. Exemplifyingleadership in the Carrier VoIP market, Nortel Networks has shipped in excessof one million voice over packet ports.
