IBM's project management approach has three phases. Elements of thesephasesrange from an assessment of the customer's Web-hosting needs to concludingwith the customer's move to an IBM location. IBM realizes thateverycustomer migration is unique and therefore uses only the specificmigration tasks required and/or desired by each customer.
Phase One - The Move Strategy:
Which components in the existing solution will move? Be retired? What is the best time to move, based upon other business factors? What is the strategy to move data, server, storage and backupresources? What should be the software strategy in the new environment?
Phase Two - Detailed Planning:
Detailed Project PlanSchedule testing dates, freeze periods and moving datesCommunicate moving plansIdentify and create application test plans
Phase Three - Execute the Detailed Plan:
Acquire and install resourcesPerform dry run testingPerform dress rehearsalPerform hardware and software migrationPerform post-move consolidation activities
IBM says its overall goal is a successful migration of the workload, withoutunplanned interruptions to the customer's business. In IBM's experience, successful e-business Hosting migrations require attention to detail, focus, and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams.
Bill Martorelli of Hurwitz Group said "while other hosting suppliers aresuffering rampant price competition, reducing their data center expansionplans and struggling toward financial viability, IBM's hosting businesscontinues to soar. IBM reported that the e-business Hosting Services unitreported $1 billion in contract bookings for the first half of 2001 - itsfirst year as a separate line of business within IBM Global Services. Byvirtue of its many strengths, IBM's e-business Hosting Services unit islikely to remain a major player in the managed hosting segment."
