📅 - Vancouver, B.C.'s Merilus, Inc. (merilus.com) announcedyesterday a new addition to their line of network security products targetedtowards the higher-end SME market, the Merilus FireRack.

The Merilus FireRack is a slimline 1U rackmount security appliance thatdelivers improved network speeds coupled with advanced network security andreporting. This high-performance product is designed for the larger small tomedium enterprise class businesses consisting of up to 1000 network usersand multiple branches connected via Virtual Private Networking. This segmentincludes education, government, financial services and manufacturing.
"The concept for FireRack was born from customer demand and existing OEMopportunities," said Steve Hemenway, Merilus vice president of marketing andResearch. "Customers were looking for a product that could provide thethroughput capability to serve larger multi branch office organizations.FireRack is that product. And when bundled with FireCard or Gateway Guardianproducts within the network, the FireRack becomes the keystone of anextremely effective and affordable network security system with defence indepth."
All Merilus products are designed do more than secure networks. FireCardPlus and Gateway Guardian Enterprise Edition are designed to improve networkperformance by allowing administrators to control bandwidth usage, generatelogging reports, use WINS and DHCP and more. The Merilus FireRack takes thisthinking to the next level by including new high-end features such asenhanced logging, reporting and centralized Web caching.
FireRack is the first Merilus product to offer centralized Web Caching, which greatly improves the performance of a network connected to theInternet by storing recently viewed Web sites locally. If a user returns tothe site or another user accesses it, FireRack will serve it up instantlywithout having to access the Internet.
"This is undoubtedly the most powerful product ever produced by Merilus, "said Dana Epp, Merilus' CEO. "Installing our technology on the FireRackhardware clearly demonstrates the power and flexibility of our software andallows potential OEM partners to see how Merilus products can cover thecomplete spectrum of the SME market."
FireRack's design is a departure for Merilus, which revolutionized thefirewall market by creating the firewall on a PCI card. With FireRack, Therevolution isn't in the hardware, it's in the ratio of performance todollars spent. "With FireRack," Hemenway said. "We kept with our 2 to 1value philosophy of offering products with either twice the features or athalf the price."
FireRack is currently ramping up to go into distribution and will ship bythe beginning of Q1 2001. FireRack will have a SRP between US$3000-4000.
