📅 October 26, 2001 - IBM yesterday introduced it's most powerful entry server, a two-way UNIX system that provides industry-leading performance, wireless manageability features and advanced self-healing technologies. The company says the new IBM eServer consumes nearly 20 percent less electricity than the comparable server from Sun Microsystems, enabling customers to realize dramatic savings on energy bills.

Available in flexible rack-mounted or tower versions, the server is idealfor mission-critical workloads such as customer relationship management,enterprise resource planning and sales force automation.
Closely following the introduction of the enterprise-class IBM eServer p690server (code-named "Regatta") and the mid-range p660 system, the IBM eServerp610 is key to IBM's strategy of winning at all segments of the servermarket.

Key features of the p610 include:
Industry-leading Performance. The eServer is the fastest entryserver as measured by the SPECjbb2000 benchmark, which evaluates javaapplication performance. The server provides outstanding performance inWeb-serving and database transaction processing.Low Power Consumption. The IBM eServer's maximum power consumptionis only 450 watts, 19 percent less than the Sun Fire 280R's 560 watts. TheeServer offers a balanced system design that enables it to conserve energy.Self-healing Technologies. IBM Project eLiza technologies, uniqueto IBM servers, enable the p610 to dramatically reduce downtime. Thesetechnologies include First Failure Data Capture, which is designed to keep arunning log of all system errors; and Persistent Deallocation, which canautomatically remove failed components when a system is rebooted. To helpadministrators quickly identify problems, major components of the p610 areequipped with LED lights that flash red if a component is not performingoptimally. A dedicated service processor monitors the overall health of thesystem and is designed to detect potential problems before they occur.Operating System Flexibility. The IBM eServer p610 runs AIX 5L andis ready for Linux applications. The fastest-growing UNIX operating system,AIX 5L offers the scalability, performance, reliability and security neededto accommodate demanding e-business workloads. AIX features a strongaffinity with Linux, allowing customers to build and run many popular Linuxapplications on AIX.Expanded Internal Storage. Containing up to 291 GB of internal diskstorage, the p610 has four times as much disk storage capacity as the SunFire 280R, which holds a maximum of 72.8 GB of internal disk. Ample storagecapacity enables customers to run powerful applications without having tobuy additional attached storage devices. Five PCI slots allow connectivityto a wide variety of other servers and devices.Wireless Administration. System administrators can manage the p610remotely using a handheld wireless PDA. This is particularly useful inserver farms, where administrators need an easy way to manage large groupsof servers.For continuous operation and extreme scalability, up to 32 serverscan be clustered together with IBM's industry-leading cluster managementsoftware.
The p610 is fueled by IBM's copper-based POWER microprocessors. Sinceinventing copper chip technology in 1997, IBM has manufactured 25 millioncopper chips.
