Nov, 2001 : WorldCom Launches Internet Access Services

📅 November 28, 2001 - WorldCom (worldcom.com), a global business data and Internet communications provider, has announced three new additions to its portfolio of Internet access services for ISP, ASP and enterprise customers nationwide.

With the introduction of WorldCom Internet VSAT (very small apertureterminal) Service, WorldCom may be the first major data services provider tooffer two-way satellite broadband access to business customers throughoutthe continental U.S. In addition, WorldCom announced nationwide availabilityof its high-speed Gigabit Ethernet and high-speed OC-48 Internet accessservices.
Under an agreement with Hughes Network Systems, a provider of broadbandsatellite solutions, WorldCom is combining the ubiquitous accesscapabilities of Direcway with the reach of the WorldCom global IP network.The companies say this allows WorldCom to deliver broadband servicevirtually everywhere - in metropolitan, suburban and even remote geographicareas, where fast Internet connections, like DSL, are limited orunavailable.
With downstream information rates of up to 1 Mbps, WorldCom Internet VSATenables remote users to use advanced business applications such asmulticasting, data-casting and interactive services, with remote access toIP- VPNs, intranets and extranets. Easily adapted for services such assatellite television, streaming video, Internet distance learning andvideo-on-demand, it allows customers to also avoid additional equipmentcosts. Similar to a satellite TV system, WorldCom's Internet VSAT usessmall, oval satellite dishes to send and receive information.
Priced comparably to DSL connections, WorldCom Internet VSAT is an "alwayson" service that does not require the installation of landline connections.

Delivered through its own network facilities, WorldCom also is now offeringhigh-speed Gigabit Ethernet Port-Only and ultra-high-speed OC-48 accessservices to corporate enterprise and service provider customers across theU.S.
WorldCom Gigabit Ethernet Port-Only Service unleashes a cost-effectivehigh-speed alternative to dedicated optical circuit connections. UsingGigabit Ethernet ports, WorldCom customers are able to use familiar EthernetLAN technologies with less expensive Ethernet equipment to effectivelyachieve data transmission speeds greater than OC-12 (622 Mbps).
Offered to customers based in WorldCom network co-location centers orWorldCom qualified third-party co-location facilities, WorldCom GigabitEthernet Port-Only Service enables customers to easily upgrade tosignificantly faster connections with speedy installation. For ISPs, ASPs orWeb hosting providers whose data communications applications have reachedthe lower OC-12 ceiling, WorldCom says its OC-48 delivers a newcost-effective threshold of ultra-high-speed service.
