Dec, 2001 : Telus Announces Community Innovation Fund Recipients


📅 - Telus (telus.com) has announced the winners of its Community Innovation Fund competition. Four community organizations in British Columbia and Alberta will each receive $25,000 for initiatives thatincorporate the use of data, Internet or wireless technologies to delivercommunity services that have social and economic community benefits.

The Telus Community Innovation Fund was established in 2000 to supportinnovative community development projects and partnerships between municipalgovernments and community groups. The Fund encourages organizations tounleash the power of the Internet and provide integrated communicationsservices in their communities.
The following is a list of the four recipients and a description of theirprojects:
Community Futures Development Corporation - North Okanagan: to develop anonline central reservations system for tourism operators and suppliers inthe North Okanagan region. The system will pool the resources of individualtourism operators and provide timely, centralized access to information suchas accommodation availability levels. This will enhance the operators'ability to cross-promote and sell the wide variety of adventure tourismexperiences the region has to offer.Vancouver Economic Development Commission: to establish Venture Vancouver,an online resource centre for small business and home office owners. It willoffer online workshops, email and discussion board support from qualifiedbusiness development professionals, sector-specific information guides,business seminar Webcasts and directories of information and business toolsrelevant to the small business and home office marketCity of Leduc Emergency Services: to deploy technology that will improve theintegration of communications systems between emergency medical, fire andpolice services and to establish a geographic information system that willenhance the speed and accuracy of dispatching emergency service vehicles tothose in distress and improve on-site patient care. The system allowsdispatchers and emergency vehicle drivers to track vehicle location anddetermine the best route to a site.City of Airdrie: to establish a Virtual City Hall kiosk that will enhancethe online access to and delivery of community services. These includeconducting property searches, obtaining property assessment information andregistering and paying for recreation programs.
The Telus Community Innovation Fund is part of Telus' Community InvestmentProgram. Through this program, Telus provides support to many charitable andnon-profit organizations in Canada. Telus is an Imagine Caring company, adesignation of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy for companies thatdonate at least one per cent of their pre-tax profits to charitable andnon-profit organizations. In 2000, Telus contributed more than $13 millionof financial and in-kind assistance to educational, health, arts andcharitable organizations across Canada.
