Dec, 2001 : China Mobile Awards Nortel $78M in Contracts
📅 - China Mobile (chinamobile.com), a wireless carrier serving the People's Republic of China, has awarded contracts valued at approximately US$78 million to Nortel Networks (nortelnetworks.com) for amajor expansion of its GSM digital cellular network in Xinjiang UygurAutonomous Region, as well as network software upgrades and networkoptimization in Xinjiang and three other areas.
Nortel Networks GSM solutions are designed to create a strong,revenue-generating platform for the future, and will help China Mobile tobring to market new services such as wireless advertising, prepaid calling,location inquiry, virtual private networks, and location-based services.
In Xinjiang, Nortel Networks has already completed a network optimizationproject for China Mobile, and will now implement its fifth expansion ofChina Mobile's existing GSM 900 digital cellular network, increasingsubscriber capacity by 600,000 to more than one million. Nortel Networkswill deploy network software upgrades to support advanced IN (IntelligentNetwork) functionality in Xinjiang, the Hunan and Shaanxi provinces, and themunicipality of Tianjin. The software upgrades will also help China Mobileincrease subscriber capacity in these four areas, the companies say.

With nearly 30 years of operating experience in Greater China, NortelNetworks has won contracts estimated to be worth more than US$1.2 billionsince the start of 2001 from customers such as China Mobile. Nortel Networksis also investing in China to deliver next generation networking solutions,and its R&D facilities in Beijing are expected to play an important role indeveloping new technologies.
