Dec 14, 2001 : BellSouth to Cut 1,200 Jobs in Q1 2002


📅 - BellSouth Corporation (bellsouth.com) has advised theCommunications Workers of America that it will be reducing 1,200non-management network operations positions in the first quarter of 2002.The force reduction covers most job titles within the Network organizationthroughout the company's nine-state region.

BellSouth will offer a voluntary separation package to affected employeesand hopes to achieve most of the reduction on a voluntary basis. Theremainder of the separations will be handled in accordance with BellSouth'scontract with the CWA.
"Our business is not immune to the larger economic forces in the market,"said Rod Odom, executive vice president, BellSouth Network Services. "Thereductions we are announcing are tied to an economy that has slowedsignificantly over the course of the past year and to a resulting drop-offin the volume of demand work we have been experiencing."
In Ocober of this year, BellSouth announced it would reduce its headcount by3,000 positions, most of which are management and most of which are in themetro Atlanta area. To date, the company has identified about two-thirds ofthe positions to be reduced as part of that announcement.
