Jan, 2002 : Yipes Builds National Data Network for Wolverine Trading
📅 - Yipes Communications, Inc. (yipes.com), a provider ofEthernet services, announced yesterday that its gigabit optical networks aredelivering real-time market information to offices of Wolverine Trading,L.P. (wolve.com) in Chicago and San Francisco, with plans to add locations in New York and Philadelphia. Wolverine also uses Yipes for high-speed Internet service and connectivity to its London office over a virtual private network.
Wolverine is a major global equity and equity options trading firm. Based inChicago, it has branch offices in London, New York, Philadelphia and SanFrancisco. Wolverine trades only for its private partnership and has nooutside capital or investors.
Replacing a legacy network of T-1 lines, Wolverine now uses multi-megabitMAN (Metropolitan Area Network) services from Yipes to connect itsheadquarters to the Chicago Stock Exchange, Chicago Board Options Exchange,Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade and its clearing firm,First Options.
Wolverine has also connected its San Francisco office over a 3Megabits-per-second Yipes NAN (National Area Network), a Layer 2 Ethernetservice scalable from 1 Mbps to 1000 Mbps in 1 Mbps increments. It hascontracted for similar services to its New York and Philadelphia offices.
Wolverine communicates with its London office through the Internet over asecure VPN. Wolverine currently uses a 5 Mbps Yipes pipe to the Internet.
Wolverine says it chose Yipes in part for its scalability. "We areimplementing new systems for the delivery of real-time market informationthat will require a vast amount of bandwidth," said Alex Shnaydman, directorof networking and infrastructure at Wolverine. "Yipes gives us the abilityto grow our bandwidth on demand, within seconds. Our connections willprobably grow to 50-to-100 Megabits per second."
As Wolverine upgrades, it won't need to buy or find room for expensive andbulky new routers, interfaces and power supplies. The standard Ethernetswitch that Yipes installs and manages in the building basement has a fullgigabit of capacity. "A couple of DS-3s would take up an entire rack andrequire an enormous amount of new conduit for cabling," he said. "WithYipes, I just need a standard fiber connection to its switch."
Wolverine says it also chose Yipes for the reliability of its architecture, based on fiber rings and a direct fiber connection to the customer premise."With Yipes there are many fewer points of failure compared to legacy telcoservices," Shnaydman said.
