In addition to his role as chairman of the NRIC, Nacchio is vice chairman ofthe National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC), aselect group of industry executives that provides advice on security andemergency preparedness issues to U.S. president George W. Bush. Nacchio isscheduled to become chairman of NSTAC later this year. The leadership rolesfor the government will not distract Nacchio from running Qwest, the companyhas stated.
Of his new leadership role at NRIC, Nacchio said, "The council's work atthis crucial time is particularly important to the safety and well being ofour nation as we study and recommend to the FCC ways to make our Internet,data and voice networks more secure, and more reliable, than ever before. Wemust ensure that essential security needs of our federal, state and localgovernments are met while continuing the high quality of service the publicrequires. I look forward to working with chairman Powell and the members ofthe Council to achieve these goals."
The NRIC was established in 1992 to bring together leaders of thetelecommunications industry and telecommunications experts from academic,consumer and other organizations to explore and recommend measures that willenhance network reliability. The original membership came from the telephoneindustry, but has been expanded over the years to include the cable,wireless and satellite industries.
On Oct. 4, 2001, Nacchio was chosen to testify before the SenateGovernmental Affairs Committee on critical infrastructure issues for thetelecommunications industry. At that time, he called for Congress to removebarriers within the telecommunications industry preventing the sharing ofinformation about network architecture and threats to the infrastructure.
