Jan, 2002 : IBM Releases Self-Healing Technology for Intel Servers

📅 - IBM announced yesterday new technology designed to reduce the cost of operating IBM's eServer xSeries line of Intel-based servers. The technology can provide up to 80 percent real cost savings and increased uptime over competitor Dell systems, according to the results of an IBM server availability measurement tool based on Gartner methodology and research data.

The new IBM measurement tools demonstrate the cost savings customers canachieve over time when operating IBM eServer xSeries system, which can helpreduce or avoid server downtime, compared with competitive Intel-basedservers. Over a five year period, for example, the new tool estimates thatIBM self-healing technology could save a medium-sized business runninggeneric applications on an IBM eServer x220 as much as $53,110 in operatingcosts over a similarly configured Dell 1400SC server. The savings are higherfor large businesses, which could save an estimated $553,280 in operatingcosts over the same period, the company stated.
Developed as part of IBM's Project eLiza initiative to create intelligent ITsystems capable of managing, protecting and healing themselvesautomatically, the new technology is part of IBM director 3.1 systemmanagement software for the IBM eServer xSeries. The self-healing softwareis designed to predict when server problems may occur, call another computerfor help and even order necessary parts, all automatically. IBM is then ableto contact the customer with a solution, such as sending a customer servicerepresentative onsite or delivering a new part, even if that part has notyet failed.
Another automated eLiza feature of IBM director is the ability to predictserver bottlenecks such as excessive processor or memory consumption thatcan lead to poor performance or even unplanned downtime. Thisself-optimizing technology alerts the customer in advance of the bottleneck, makes recommendations to avoid it, and provides a response when the alert isreceived. This feature allows the server to monitor itself to ensure optimalperformance freeing the customer to concentrate on core business issues.
"The cost of running a server is more than just the initial hardwareacquisition cost - there's the human costs for running and managing aserver, as well as the cost of server downtime," said Deepak Advani, vicepresident of IBM eServer xSeries. "IBM's systems management solution, IBMdirector, is designed to offer customers improved server availability withmore automated capabilities, requiring less staff to run the systems."
