Jan, 2002 : WRNN-TV Integrates Wire One's IP Network into Broadcasts

(wireone.com), a provider ofvideo communications solutions, today announced that WRNN-TV (rnntv.com), an independent regional television news network with studios in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, has become the first television station to use its Glowpoint Internet Protocol videoconferencing network as part of a live studio broadcast.
The first Glowpoint broadcast, on Jan. 21, 2002, featured House MinorityLeader Richard Gephardt in Washington, D.C. The congressman discussed howthe public's view of the war against terrorism will be affecting upcomingelections this year.
With a studio in Washington, D.C., and production facilities in the NewYork, WRNN said it needed a cost-effective, dependable means of linking anddelivering high-quality, live video broadcasts from a remote D.C. locationto its market of 2.7 million households. The station turned to Wire One'sGlowpoint IP video network as an alternative to ISDN, an older,lower-quality, less reliable, more costly technology for videocommunications.
Wire One CTO Michael Brandofino said, "We believe this is the first time atelevision station has used IP videoconferencing for live broadcasting, andit's definitely an innovative, yet very practical application of thetechnology and one which may address a broad market. Other tools likesatellite video phones, as seen recently on cable news networks, have gainedpopularity, but they are expensive and subject to long transmission delays,and they ultimately deliver poor quality.
