Jan, 2002 : EDS to Manage Nextel's IT Infrastructure


📅 - Nextel Communications Inc. (nextel.com), a national providerof wireless communications services, and EDS (eds.com), a global services company, has announced a $234 million, five-year IT outsourcing agreementunder which EDS will manage Nextel's corporate data center, databaseadministration, helpdesk, desktop services and other technical functions.Nextel and EDS have chosen Sun as the platform provider of choice for thiscontract.

Both, Nextel and EDS are closely aligned with Sun Microsystems. Last April,Nextel became the first company in North America to provide Sun's Javatechnology over wireless phones, and the company expects to have 1 millionJava technology-enabled handsets in the marketplace by March 2002.
EDS established a Continuum of Services Alliance with Sun last year to workcollaboratively to provide strategy, technology and services to supportmajor corporations.
All three companies expect to work together to identify the potential fordeveloping wireless data solutions based on Sun's Java technology.
"To stay at the top of our game, we count on reliable IT systems to supportour day-to-day and mission-critical work," said Dick LeFave, senior vicepresident and CIO of Nextel. "This relationship with EDS is critical to ourability to realize efficiencies through IT solutions. We expect to reduceour IT costs by $140 million over five years, while exceeding service levelsto our internal and external customers."
Nextel employs IT professionals in various offices across the United States.As part of this outsourcing agreement about 290 employees will be moved toEDS employment and management and will continue to work in support ofNextel's IT infrastructure.
