Feb, 2002 : National Archives Taps Siemens for Network Upgrade

📅 - Siemens Enterprise Networks LLC, (siemensenterprise.com) asubsidiary of Siemens AG and a provider of converged voice and datasolutions, announced today that it has been awarded contracts totaling $7.1million to upgrade the voice and data networks of the National Archives andRecords Administration (nara.gov).

The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent federalagency that oversees the management of federal records includingpresidential papers and the records related to the formation of thegovernment, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, andthe Bill of Rights. The National Archives operates 33 regional facilities in18 states nationwide.
The implementation of Siemens HiPath convergence solution will enable theNational Archives to use a single nationwide communications system, savingcosts by combining its voice and data networks. All of the NationalArchives' 33 sites will be connected to form a unified privatecommunications network, using VoIP over the wide area network. Thisconverged network will provide a single system image with universal accessto centralized applications, including Siemens HiPath Xpressions unifiedmessaging product, a messaging system which offers a single point of entryfor all message types (e-mail, voice, and fax) and retrieval via telephoneor a PC e-mail client.
By implementing a converged solution, the National Archives gains increasedsurvivability at each of the networked nodes. Should the IP network fail, each site can automatically route voice calls over the public switchedtelephone network.
"This solution is particularly well-suited for enterprise customers such asthe government or large corporations that have branch offices distributedacross the U.S. or around the globe," said Tom Welsh, vice president ofglobal accounts at Siemens Enterprise Networks. "By developing thisconvergence path for the National Archives and Records Administration,Siemens reinforces its goal of delivering practical convergence to itscustomers, based on their specific needs and at their own pace," hecontinued.
