Mar, 2002 : JDS Uniphase Releases New Wavelength Blocker

📅 - JDS Uniphase Corporation (jdsu.com) yesterday announced theWavelength Blocker (WB) for use in next-generation reconfigurable fiberoptic communications systems. Using an all-optical design, the WB canattenuate or block any number of wavelengths and be reconfigured to selectalternative wavelengths in milliseconds, the company said.

The WB is part of a new family of technologies that can be used to reduceoperating costs of optical networks for carriers. The all-optical designenables remote, dynamic channel reconfiguration and offers cost savings whencompared to current methods that use optoelectronic regenerators or requirethe installation of new equipment or manual adjustments for reconfiguration, the company says. The two-port WB, available and now being shipped tocustomers, is the first product in this family to be announced. Nextgeneration products being developed include 1xN multi-port wavelengthswitches.
The WB covers the entire C or the entire extended L band with wavelengthspacings of 50 or 100 GHz. All wavelengths may enter the device, and anyselection of these wavelengths can be simultaneously attenuated to any levelor completely blocked. Each wavelength power level can be independentlycontrolled or blocked remotely via an electronic signal. The wide passbandand low dispersion characteristics allow the WB to be cascaded to allow forconcatenation of multiple devices in an all-optical wavelength routednetwork.
The WB has high optical performance over its entire operating temperaturerange, including 0.5 dB bandwidths of +/- 11 GHz for the 50 GHz model and+/- 25 GHz for the 100 GHz model. The WB module, including fiber managementand interface microprocessor electronics, is relatively compact, at 245 x140 x 70 mm for the 50 GHz model and 220 x 110 x 32 mm for the 100 GHzmodel.
The Wavelength Blocker is available for order from JDS Uniphaserepresentatives and distributors in either 100 GHz or 50 GHz configurationsin C or L band. More information about these products can be found on theJDS Uniphase Web site.

📅 - Qwest-Enron Deal Under Further Scrutiny - This week investors and analysts filed the results of their examination of a deal between Qwest and Enron, made last September, to buy $112 million worth of communications network capacity from each other. Discussions in a federal bankruptcy court in Manhattan were meant to determine the nature of the swap and its timing suggested a last-minute act of desperation to patch up Qwest's particularly weak quarter. At the time of the Qwest?Enron deal, the already debt-burdened Qwest had a massive, new fiber-optic network in place. Industry also noted Qwest's October report of a sharp third-quarter earning and revenue shortfall. Analysts say the deal the deal is indicative of a c
