Apr, 2002 : Inkra Introduces Virtual Service Switch Products
📅 - Fremont, California-based Inkra Networks (inkra.com), a technology firm building a new set of high-end data center switches, today introduced its first Virtual Service Switches (VSS) based on the company's Virtual Service Architecture (VSA).
The Inkra 1500 and Inkra 4000 Virtual Service Switches are designed to integrate the functionality of thousands of dedicated appliance and service elements in an enterprise or service provider data center. Together, the company's VSS and VSA aim to meet the stringent requirements of Service Level Agreements, reduce capital expenditure costs to one-tenth their original size, and deploy custom, hardware-accelerated IP service suites that include VPNs, load balancing and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) acceleration.
Dave Roberts, Inkra's Vice President of Marketing, said the company's new VSS and VSA technologies are designed to eliminate the "conga line of applications that front end a lot of Web sites out there today." As a result, the company designed its hardware and software offerings around the notion of a "virtual rack," Roberts said.
"It's a pretty fundamental concept in our architecture," he said. "A virtual rack is analogous to a physical rack of networking equipment. It's a container in to which you put services the same way that a physical rack is a container in to which you screw physical appliances."
The company has developed a resource management suite, named HardWall, to ensure security and stability between virtual racks and a company's network. The company's CenterPoint technology, a software-based management center, allows companies to monitor their Inkra systems from a central site.
Internet services firm SAVVIS Communications has been one of the early testers of Inkra's offerings, integrating the company's products in to its own hosting architecture. Robert McCormick, the company's President and CEO, said Inkra's offerings are well suited to Savvis' approach to networking. "We want to be able to put all the intelligence in the infrastructure, and then offer virtualized services to customers," he said. "It fits perfectly with what we're looking to do, and? we were pretty excited to run in to them, because we were getting a little bit frustrated with the lack of vision in the hosting hardware space."
The Inkra 4000 Virtual Service Switch will be available this quarter, while the smaller, "pizza box" 1500 will be available Q3 2002.
