May, 2002 : eBay, Qwest Sign Multi-Year Web Hosting Agreement

📅 May 2, 2002 - Business communication provider Qwest Communications International Inc. (qwest.com -> lumen.com) announced on Thursday that online marketplace eBay (ebay.com) has selected Qwest to provide Web hosting services as part of eBay's strategy to diversify its Web hosting functions.

The multi-year arrangement calls for Qwest to provide secure, reliable dedicated hosting and network facilities for eBay's marketplace, one of the world's most popular Web sites, with nearly 46 million registered users.
eBay will use the Qwest CyberCenter in Sunnyvale, California, connected to its 190,000-mile global fiber network. Qwest says its CyberCenters have some of the industry's most advanced procedures for monitoring, diagnosing and resolving network problems, a must for eBay's demanding global marketplace.
"The success of our diversification strategy relies on finding world class hosting providers who can meet eBay's growing demands for space, power and bandwidth," says Marty Abbott, eBay's vice president of operations and IT. "Qwest has the ability to deliver direct and secure connections to one of the world's most advanced broadband networks. It was a key factor in our decision to select Qwest for this critical function."
Qwest says its team of trained professionals monitor all of the company's Web hosting services, from basic co-location to customized e-commerce and ASP solutions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Qwest CyberCentral, its centralized hosting operations center. The Web sites and e-commerce solutions are housed in one of the company's 16 CyberCenters, built to ensure equipment is up and running even under extreme conditions.
