Oct 29, 2002 : Sun Announces Free Server Software

📅 - Computer hardware and software developer Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced on Monday that it has released an updated version of its application server software, adding that it planned to offer a free version of the platform.

Sun says it has released two new versions of its Sun ONE Application Server 7. The Platform Edition is available as a free download for Solaris and Windows Operating systems, while the Standard Edition, which includes additional management tools, is available for $2,000 per server processor.
According to Sun, the new software is more tightly linked to its Java development tools. The new server version includes better support for Web services standards like Web Services Description Language (WDSL), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Electronic Business Extensible Markup Language (ebXML) and Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI).
Sun says it plans to extend the free release to include versions compatible with the SunLinux, HP-UX and AIX operating systems as soon as January.
The release of the free software is an effort by Sun to increase its share of the application server market, where it holds the 7.9 percent of the market, and the fourth position behind BEA, IBM and Oracle, according to data from IDC. Sun said earlier in the year that it plans to include a free low-end version of its application server with the Solaris operating system. The company says that version is scheduled for release in January.
