Aug, 2003 : Central Command Warns of New Sobig Attack

📅 August 22, 2003 - Central Command (centralcommand.com), a provider of anti-virus software and services, cautioned users today of the next possible Sobig cyber attack on or about September 11, 2003.

The Sobig.F worm was discovered on August 19, 2003 and is the fifth version of the virus.
It has been estimated to have infected millions of systems worldwide and could potentially draw on them to attack major online services.
The virus is set to expire on September 10, 2003, and according to reports, the new version - Sobig.G - could appear shortly after.
"The virus author(s) of Sobig have developed a predictable pattern of releasing new variants soon after the current version de-activates itself," said Steven Sundermeier, vice-president of products and services at Central Command. "If the past repeats itself we could be looking at a newly constructed creation shortly after September 10th. A potential risk is that the massive army created by Worm/Sobig.F could be used to launch an all out attack on large Internet infrastructures, for example, by means of a Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS)."
The company said it is monitoring the situation and recommends the development of safe computing practices when handling e-mail attachments.
