👈 Official Responses: 0 -> web.com) announced on Wednesday that the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation has chosen Hostcentric to host and manage a new public-access database of immigrant records and photos at ellisislandrecords.com.
The information, featured in the grand opening of The American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island Immigration Museum on April 17, is intended to allow descendants of immigrants who landed at the port of New York and Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924 to find information about their ancestors in interactive databases and via the Internet.
Hostcentric says it will play a key role in the availability of the data by maintaining the server connectivity directly to the interactive kiosks at Ellis Island and the Internet, allowing users direct access to the 22 million historic immigrant records contained in the database. Users at both the center and Web surfers can create, print and download family history scrapbooks at the site.
According to Hostcentric, working on such an historic and worthwhile project has been rewarding for the company. Creating an environment of this scope, said the company, that would support 1.5 terabytes of data, required collaboration between Hostcentric and two of its technology partners. Hardware manufacturer Compaq provided the AlphaServers needed to run the databases supplied by software maker Oracle.
Hostcentric also worked closely with New York-based digital studio R/GA Interactive, which wrote the custom application that allows users to search the immigrant database and view the ships.
