Apr 25, 2001 : Lucent to Hire 500 Engineers in India

📅 - After already reporting a sizeable loss this week, struggling telecommunications equipment manufacturer Lucent Technologies (lucent.com) said on Wednesday that it would hire 500 engineers in India as part of a global revamp plan.
Lucent's Inter-Networking Systems unit inaugurated its Indian software center in Bangalore on Wednesday. Staff at the facility is expected to rise to 125 by June, and 500 in two years, according to the company.
The company says that the Indian division is a key area for Lucent, as it changes from its past focus on circuit-switched networks to ones based on data packets, and involving optical and wireless technologies. Lucent, which announced 10,000 job cuts this year, points out that the cuts were mainly in circuit-switching or marketing, whereas the India center will focus on writing software to go with the latest equipment in order to offer complete solutions to customers.
The India center, which involved a $10 million investment by Lucent in the first phase, is part of the company's efforts to bring high-end product development to the country. Lucent says the facility will work round the clock with its US counterparts.
Lucent says it is planning to make the India development center the largest center in the world in the network operation software arena over the next few years. The company also pointed out that its motivation for investing in India was not the low costs, but the quality of work.
On Tuesday, Lucent reported a $3.7 billion second quarter loss, but its stock surged in response to hopes for an early turnaround. The results included $2.7 billion in restructuring charges.
