Jan 30, 2009 : The webhost industry: week review

📅 - We spent a lot of this week previewing next week's Parallels Summit 2009, but along with that calculated focus, another trend emerged more naturally from within this week's news.

That more natural trend was, as often seems to be the case these days, a string of data center expansion and construction stories.

On Monday, Global Net Access announced that it would expand its AtlantaNAP colocation facility, adding another 13,500 square feet of available space. The company says the expansion, which follows a major cooling system upgrade announced in October of 2008, will help the AtlantaNAP serve its enterprise customers. According to the company, CIOs are "optimizing their use of space" in colocation facilities in light of the economic situation.

That economic climate is one of the factors driving data center construction at the moment. Uncertain economic times are good times for outsourcing, goes the argument.

On Thursday, hosting company LiquidWeb issued some details on the construction of its Datacenter 3 facility, which is nearing completion. The update included photos from the construction, as well as video updates. The new facility will provide 90,000 square feet of space, which LiquidWeb says can accommodate 25,000 servers.

On Wednesday, NTT Communications announced that it had partnered with China Telecom Shanghai to launch the Tier 3 Yuanqu Data Center in Shanghai on February 2. The facility will serve as a point of presence for the company's global e-VLAN service, along with providing more typical data center functions.

And on Thursday we reported that Czech Internet service provider SuperNetwork had just opened its new Datacamp facility near Prague. The company says the newly launched facility is at 15 percent capacity, with new customers coming in. Until the end of February, SuperNetwork will be running a promotion offering two lines to each server sold.

Along with all the data center news, this week has seen us preparing for next week's Parallels Summit by posting Q&A interviews with a few of the speakers from the event.

On Saturday, we posted an interview with Parallels CEO Serguei Beloussov, who will be delivering the opening and closing keynotes for the event, and who obviously has a pretty broad perspective on its objectives.

Later this week we posted a Q&A with Jamie de Guerre, chief technology officer of spam filtering software developer, Cloudmark. He'll be presenting at the Parallels Summit, offering some insight into how his company's products work, and how hosting providers can profit from filtering spam.

And on Thursday we posted a Q&A with Jonathan McCarrick of Parallels, who will be presenting on the company's newly-updated Parallels Plesk Billing software at the event.

The ongoing-interest angle is pretty clear. We'll be at the Parallels event in force next week, providing tons of coverage of the sessions and keynotes, and covering announcements from Parallels partners at the event. So keep an eye on our Parallels Summit coverage feed, which is already filling up with content.
