📅 - Internet exchange services provider Switch and Data (switchanddata.com -> equinix.com) announced on Tuesday that IP network services provider NTT America (nttamerica.com) has expanded across Switch and Data's colocation facilities in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Seattle, and Palo Alto, California.
Enterprise and service provider customers in Switch and Data's sites in these markets will now be able to gain direct access the NTT Communications Global IP Network, the world's only commercial grade global Tier-1 IPv6 backbone operating across four continents.
Web hosting provider SoftLayer Technologies also announced on Tuesday it is now offering IPv6 support across its Dallas, Seattle, and Washington, DC data centers.
As the next generation of Internet protocol, IPv6 has significantly greater range of IP addresses than IPv4, as it uses 128-bit address instead of 32 bits.
As a result, this address expansion provides greater flexibility in allocating addresses and routing traffic, eliminating the need for network address translation to avoid address exhaustion.
While only four percent of the Internet's networks support IPv6, it is designed to eventually replace the IPv4 standard.
In 2008, there were approximately 150 million IPv4 addresses assigned, leaving an availability of about 570 million addresses, says Penn State's Derek Morr in his recent summary of IPv6 deployment.
"The new Internet protocol, IPv6, significantly improves the function and commercial use of the Internet in terms of scalability, security, mobility and network management," says Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO of NTT America and vice president of the NTT Communications Global IP Network. "Even with the current economic situation we continue to see traffic growth above 70 percent annually. With more and more people using the Internet, more mobile devices accessing the Internet and social networking sites becoming ever more popular, the time to upgrade to the new Internet protocol is now. We are very pleased to have an Internet exchange partner like Switch and Data, a company that shares our vision for IPv6 and can help foster its adoption in the United States."
According to NTT America, there has been a large demand for IPv6 services from downstream ISPs, universities, research institutions, next generation application providers and organizations that focus on wireless technologies.
NTT America already has customers in Switch and Data's facilities, offering IPv6 transit service in native, tunneled or dual stack modes on different interfaces up to 10GigE.
An early adopter of IPv6, Switch and Data has incorporated IPv6 services into its Layer 2 PAIX Internet exchanges at all 34 of its data centers in the US and Canada.
Customers can implement IPv4, IPv6, or dual IPv4/IPv6 peering using a single peering port with no extra charges, special usage or setup fees.
In December, Switch and Data added a section of its website that contains links to reliable data center industry information sources, as well as whitepapers.
