Dec 8, 2008 : Switch and Data Hosts IM Service

📅 - Colocation services provider Switch and Data (switchanddata.com -> equinix.com) announced on Monday that eBuddy (ebuddy.com), a supplier of web and mobile instant messaging, has consolidated its server infrastructure into Switch and Data's facility in Sunnyvale, California.

Previously, eBuddy was housed in an undisclosed "network provider's legacy data center" which supplied power up to 125 watts per square foot. However, eBuddy says it needed more power to continue to scale its infrastructure, which is what led it to select Switch and Data's new facility in Sunnyvale.

According to the announcement, Switch and Data's Silicon Valley facility offers power and cooling capacity up to 200 watts per square foot. The location is also ideal, says eBuddy, because it minimizes latency due to its close proximity to leading IM platforms.

"We evaluated multiple providers in Silicon Valley and Switch and Data stood out with a modern, high security facility, market leading power density, and their reputation for excellent technical support," says Onno Bakker, co-founder and chief operating officer of eBuddy. "Our new facility in their Sunnyvale site gives us the power to scale our infrastructure well into the future to support the continued growth of our business."

According to the eBuddy website, the Amsterdam-based company was founded in 2003 and created "the world's first independent, web browser-based instant messaging service as e-Messenger." Its product enables users to chat free of charge within one, aggregated messaging interface that supports the five leading IM networks: AOL, Google Talk, MSN, MySpace and Yahoo Messenger.

The service seems to be popular as the press release states that "more than 18 million visitors access eBuddy each month" and last Thursday eBuddy announced that it has experienced explosive growth, surpassing a milestone of 10 million downloads of its mobile IM client, eBuddy Mobile Messenger, since its launch in June 2007.

Web 2.0 companies as well as digital content providers and companies, which provide web-based software applications, require increasing power density and cooling to store and distribute their content, says Switch and Data.

To meet this demand, the colocation provider has launched five new sites in the past year including in Dallas, New York Metro, the San Francisco Bay Area, Toronto and Vienna, Virginia to supply power and cooling at more than 200 watts per square foot.

In October, the company most recently opened the first phase of its 163,000 square foot North Bergen, New Jersey data center, its largest to date. Some of the customers that have already signed on there include FXCM.com, Intermedia, Limelight and AboveNet.
