Oct 27, 2008 : R1Soft Launches CDP 2.0

📅 October 27, 2008 - Software developer R1Soft (r1soft.com) has announced its Continuous Data Protection 2.0 software for Windows and Linux servers is now stable and generally available, giving users shorter backup windows and better data protection with its both file and image-based bare-metal restores.

According to R1Soft's announcement Monday, Windows CDP 2.0 marks the first generally available release of CDN for Windows and has been downloaded thousands of times since its beta release in August.

The Windows CDP 2.0 Agent does not require special hardware and the company said it can be setup in as little as 15 minutes. R1Soft's CDP technology uses special device drivers and is able to outperform competing products with entire server backups as often as every 15 minutes.

"When it comes to Windows CDP, there are three types of products," R1Soft vice president David Wartell said in a statement. "The first type is replication-based CDP, such as CommVault and Falconstor. The second type offers near-Continuous backup protection, such as MS DPM and Symantec BackupExec. But only the third type offers true Continuous Protection, and that's R1Soft.

"Users are telling us that replication-based CDP products are just too expensive and too complicated to deploy widely. The second type of products all rely on MS VSS for Shared Folders API and are very limited in scale and scope. For example, Symantec BackupExec and MS DPM both have a hard limit of 256 recovery points per DPM server and they can only provide near-Continuous protection for a subset of the server's file system."

The new version of CDP adds 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 2008 Server and Linux support, allowing customers the freedom to chooseoperating systems when it comes to Windows data protection.

Founded in 2003, R1Soft has quickly become a leading provider of disk-based backup solutions, with its CDP becoming an industry standard. In August, European Web hosting provider SpiralHost (spiralhost.com ), and online media company WpWeb (wpweb.com) joined the R1Soft Hosting Partner Program, offering its CDP solution to clients as a hosting service add-on.
