Feb 19, 2008 : Virgin Media Faces Email Outages
📅 - Telecommunications provider Virgin Media's (virginmedia.com) customers recently suffered from email outages over the past few days due to a mysterious configuration problem discovered in one of VM's eight email server clusters last Wednesday. The ongoing failure was said to have affected about 10 percent of VM's ex-Telewest subscribers.
In a written statement, VM said that it had been suffering intermittent problems for some customers with @blueyonder.co.uk email addresses and had been working with its platform supplier, Microsoft, to establish the cause of the problem. The company also took this opportunity to issue a statement of apology to its customers.
According to reports by The Register, the outages prompted VM to call in Microsoft engineers to help with an urgent Exchange upgrade on its servers. A VM spokesman says this failure has helped to accelerate a previously-discussed program to migrate the email servers to a Microsoft Exchange 2003 platform. The upgrade is anticipated to take approximately two weeks, as long as the company faces no further issues.
VM says that a separate hardware problem on an authentication server was also causing a slowdown across all eight clusters, but this has reportedly now been resolved.
