Feb 5, 2008 : XM Radio Installs Foundry Switches

📅 - End-to-end switching and routing provider Foundry Networks (foundrynet.com) announced on Tuesday that XM Satellite Radio (xmradio.com) has installed Foundry's BigIron, FastIron SuperX, FastIron SX 800 and FastIron Edge X series Layer 2/3 switches to power its satellite broadcasts.

The director of content distribution systems for XM's Radio Broadcast Operations Group, Damon Love, says that XM was able to efficiently scale its infrastructure to provide more channels while still achieving low-latency audio delivery because of the high performance of Foundry's switches. Love also adds that since Foundry's switches are built from the same ASIC family, the company is confident that after a bit of testing, it can deploy the release out to its enterprise networks and get predictable operation and performance.

"XM Radio's growing base of satellite radio subscribers demand exceptional performance from their network," says Bob Schiff, VP and general manager for Foundry's Enterprise Business Unit. "Foundry's networking solutions will help deliver high performance, reliability, availability and scalability for XM Radio's rapidly growing network infrastructure in order for them to deliver the best possible satellite radio content and service to millions of listeners."

XM Radio offers more than 170 digital channels of music, news, talk, sports, comedy and children's programming and says it has a customer base of more than 8.5 million subscribers.

1&1 Internet recently deployed Foundry Networks' NetIron XMR 4000 backbone routers to power its network for scalable growth and to significantly lower capital and operating expenditures.
