Aug 14, 2001 : Lucent Releases Improved DHCP Server
📅 - Lucent Technologies (lucent.com) today announced that one ofthe world's fastest Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers justgot faster. According to independent testing done at Exodus Performance Labs(exoduslabs.net), the newest version of the Lucent DHCP server is 13 percentfaster than previous releases. The test results demonstrate that the newLucent server can assign more than 79,000 IP addresses per minute, which iscritical for service providers to avoid service delays and outages.
When a computer user accesses a network, the Lucent DHCP 5.2 server verifiesthe device's identity and then assigns it an IP address for that usersession. The server is a part of the VitalQIPTM DNS/DHCP and IP Managementsolution, which provides configuration tracking and management of IPnetworks domain name service, and DHCP services.
VitalQIP software is a part of the new Lucent Navis iOperations Softwareportfolio, announced last month.
"With our new release of the DHCP server, we're not only improving theserver's already world-class speed, we're adding functionality at the sametime," said Madan Kumar, vice president of network operations software forLucent.
Available worldwide in September, the DHCP 5.2 server can provide supportfor longer names, in response to the growing needs of today's complexnetwork naming conventions. Also, the new release of the Lucent DHCP servergives service providers the ability to shuffle IP addresses, so that usersdon't get the same address every time they log on. This is important for theprevention of unauthorized Web server hosting, which can deprive serviceproviders of revenue. The Lucent DHCP 5.2 also gives service providers andnetwork administrators the ability to deliver differentiated classes ofservice to customers in a single address pool. This can take the form ofproviding a premium "gold" service to customers who pay more for it, or in acampus setting, applying certain characteristics and access privileges todifferent groups of users. For example, students might be granted access toa set of intranet sites, and professors might be granted those same accessprivileges, plus others.
The new Lucent DHCP 5.2 release and associated performance improvements areaimed at ensuring that Lucent keeps its long-standing market leadership inIP address management. Recently, IDC, a market research firm, affirmedLucent as the top market share position for stand-alone IP addressmanagement software. According to the report, Lucent ranked first in termsof calendar year 2000 revenue, with 40 percent market share.
According to the IDC report, strong growth in the IP address managementmarket will continue through 2005, and is contingent upon the enterprisemarket adopting IP telephony, the growing reliance on IP-VPNs, and thebuild-out of wireless service delivery networks. In the April 2001 report,IDC projects steadily rising market growth rates each year - from 15.2percent in 2001 to 31 percent in 2005.
"The growth in IP-service and more stringent address management will propelIP address management product revenue in the coming years," said PaulBugala, research analyst at IDC. "The key to Lucent's success is for theVitalQIP group to take advantage of market opportunities and continue toleverage internal resources within Lucent's remote access, wireless and VPNgroups."
