Aug 15, 2001 : Intel and HP Deliver Itanium Webcast

📅 - The Itanium processor is for Intel (intel.com) as important a change as was the introduction of the i386 thirteen years ago. Jointly developed over seven years with Hewlett-Packard (hp.com), Intel's Itanium processor is driving an industry-wide wave of development activity.

Intel also has engineering teams at work filling out a product family basedon the Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) architecture. At theIntel Developers Forum in the Spring of 2001, Intel and Hewlett-Packarddemonstrated working first silicon of the next product in the IPF, codenamed "McKinley," with HP-UX.
Yesterday, Intel and Partner Marketing Networks (okpmw.com) hosted a liveWebcast entitled "Itanium: The Future of e-Business," informing viewers onthe potential of this advanced processing architecture. The streamingWebcast will be repeated on Wednesday, Sept. 12, beginning at 1:20 p.m. EST.
Host Mike Carbone talked to guests from Intel and Hewlett-Packard in aformat similar to CNN's "Larry King Live" program, who used video, graphics,PowerPoint and experts to support their answers. Guests included DougCooper, Intel's Canada country manager and Emery John Bodnar,Hewlett-Packard's company marketing manager, enterprise systems operations.
Among the issues brought to the table were the key benefits and features ofItanium's architecture, how it compares to other available processors, whichindustries stand to benefit most from the processor, and the availability ofItanium products, services, and support now and in the future. This wasfollowed by a live Q&A and chat session.
The new processor is the first in a family based on the 64-bit Itaniumarchitecture. It was designed from the ground up to meet the increasingdemands for high availability, scalability and performance needed forenterprise-class and Internet-enabled computing. Itanium enablesbreakthrough capabilities in processing terabytes of data, increasedtransactions, secure e-commerce and complex computations.
