Aug 31, 2001 : Dell to Exit Web Hosting Market

📅 August 31, 2001 - Dell Computer Corp. is selling its Web hosting business to Sprint Corp., according to a report published today in The Wall Street Journal.
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
Under the agreement, Sprint will pick up DellHost's customer base and technology assets. In return, Sprint will base its hosting offerings on the Dell hardware platform.
The two companies put out a press release yesterday which announcing a Web hosting "alliance", with the firms working together to create an offering geared toward the SME (Small to Medium Enterprise) market.
The release said the companies expected "hundreds of millions" of dollars in sales over the next seven years through the alliance.
The immediate outcome of the release, however, appears to be that Dell will unload most of its hosting operations on Sprint.
A Dell spokesperson also told the paper the company would sell its minority stake in Web hosting firm Interliant, which provides DellHost with most of its hosting solutions. The Journal also said Sprint would hire less than 100 employees from Dell's North American Web hosting operations.
