Oct, 2001 : EDS Launches Lifecycle Management Organization


📅 - Staking out a leadership position in the rapidly growingproduct lifecycle management market, EDS (eds.com) yesterday launched PLMSolutions, combining the former Unigraphics Solutions (ugs.com) andStructural Dynamics Research Corporation (sdrc.com).

PLM Solutions delivers integrated technology and services supporting theentire lifecycle of a product - from concept and development to distributionand delivery. It becomes EDS' fifth line of business, joining A.T. Kearney,Business Process Management, E-Solutions and Information Solutions.
"With more than half of the PLM market consisting of professional services,hosting, operations and management, we expect sizeable 'pull through'revenue opportunities for our other four lines of business," said DickBrown, EDS chairman and CEO. "By integrating PLM's suite of UGS and SDRCsoftware with world-class consulting and services expertise, EDS hassignificantly expanded its business opportunities and created themanufacturing industry's only single source for fully serviced productlifecycle solutions."
On May 23, EDS announced its intent to acquire and merge UGS and SDRC - twoleading suppliers of product development, data management and collaborativeproduct commerce software and services - into a new line of business withmore than $1 billion in revenues. The company announced the closing of theSDRC acquisition on Sept. 4 and the UGS acquisition on Sept. 28.
UGS and SDRC have complementary product sets, and together they provide themost comprehensive software and services in the PLM industry. PLM offeringsdigitally produce and share product planning, design, manufacturing anddistribution information for collaboration via local networks and theInternet.
The market for PLM software and services is growing rapidly. The market isestimated to be $17 billion in 2001 and is expected to grow by 16-20 percentannually, to more than $35 billion by 2005.
"This aggressive expansion into PLM establishes EDS as a leader in adouble-digit growth business and one of the most promising and fast-growingmarkets in the digital economy," Brown said.
With over 1.6 million 'seats' of software installed, PLM Solutions is thelargest supplier of product lifecycle solutions in the industry, and is wellpositioned to leverage the strength and expertise of EDS. This new unitbrings with it 24,000 clients, many of whom are new to EDS, and greatlyexpanded relationships with global companies including Seagate, generalMotors, Mazda, Honeywell, Nissan and Nokia.
