Wavecom Signs Brightstar as Distributor for GSM/GPRS Modules
📅 - Wavecom Inc., subsidiary of Wavecom SA (wavecom.com) and adeveloper of digital wireless standard modules and modems, today announcedthat Brightstar Corp. (brightstarcorp.com) will distribute its GSM/GPRS products in North and South America.
Wavecom develops a complete line of wireless standard modules (WISMO) andmodems for GSM (Global System for Mobile) and GPRS (general Packet RadioService) platforms. "With Brightstar's network in Latin America, thispartnership certainly strengthens our distribution capabilities," said HanyNeoman, Wavecom's U.S. chief operating officer. "Working with companies likeBrightstar and our other distributors will help us expand our business inthe personal communication devices, mobile computing, automotive andtelemetry/M2M sectors."
More than 70 percent of the world's wireless networks are GSM based,including all of Europe and much of Asia. With more than 12 millionsubscribers, GSM has been gaining ground in the fragmented U.S. market.Integrated GSM/GPRS solutions, such as WISMO modules and modems, provideNorth and South American manufacturers with a cost effective technology andaccess to wireless applications in their respective regions and in theworldwide markets.
Wavecom also recently announced a strategic decision to expand itsdevelopment horizons and offer products based on CDMA (Code DivisionMultiple Access). Although GSM/GPRS is at present the world's most widelyused wireless communications standard, CDMA accounts for nearly 40 per centof the market in North America and is making inroads into Asia, particularlyin China.
