📅 - Cable & Wireless (cw.com) announced it has activated itstransatlantic OC-192 links using multi-protocol label switching technologyconnecting seven cities in the US, UK and Europe.

The company says the network upgrade significantly improves the quality ofservice Cable & Wireless can offer its customers. As the first step in aglobal network upgrade to OC-192 using MPLS, the multi-city IP connectionslink Washington, DC and New York with London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam andFrankfurt. The high speed connections support the network performance andQuality of Service requirements of large scale Internet content providers,as well as providing scale to keep Cable & Wireless ahead of demand for IPservices.
"This is an important milestone for Cable & Wireless and the industry inmaking the Internet the real industrial strength communicationsinfrastructure our customers need and expect," said Andy Macleod, executivevice president, operations, C&W. "With this network enhancement, Cable &Wireless continues to lead the industry with the largest single tier oneglobal network that is capable of delivering the highest quality service ona global scale and is designed to support significant growth in new IP-basedcommunications services."
Among those who might benefit from the upgrade are Internet contentproviders, global ISPs, and businesses looking to operate globally, thecompany said. "Cable & Wireless is in the process of moving aggressivelyfrom what was once a traditional telephone network to a multi-service,multi-technology data network based on IP and MPLS," said Liz McPhillips, analyst at Probe Research. "It has moved out of the consumer business, selling off its mobile and cable television properties, and has become oneof the world's largest and most successful global Tier 1 carriers."
MPLS provides a more predictable performance for all traffic, be it voice, data or video, ensuring low packet delay together with virtually no packetloss and very low jitter even as the network continues to grow. Cable &Wireless regularly achieves the low latency and packet loss and among thehighest reliability ratings, according to independent analyst Matrix.Net(ratings.matrix.net).
Cable & Wireless' global IP network is based on a core traffic engineeringplatform using Juniper Networks' M160 MPLS routers, providing switchingfunctions at 10 Gbps. This provides a scalable transport core for individualservices, such as IP transit, hosting, content delivery services includingstreaming media by recognizing and supporting their different QoS and Classof Service requirements.
