WLAN Equipment Market in Second Year of Double-Digit Growth


📅 - The Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) market posted its eighth consecutive quarter of double- digit growth and grew over 150 percentfrom 2000, according to market analysis by Synergy Research Group(synergyresearchgroup.com).

Wireless LAN equipment sales increased almost 12 percent in the fourthquarter over the prior quarter with total sales reaching over $450 millionand reached $1.47 billion for the year 2001. For the quarter, enterpriseWLAN equipment sales were flat, while SOHO/home WLAN equipment sales grewover 25 percent to $225 million and equaled that of the enterprise.
"Despite a slower quarter in the enterprise, the overall WLAN marketcontinues to show healthy growth," said Aaron Vance, WLAN industry analystat Synergy Research. "Furthermore, strong growth in the SOHO/home segmentfurther demonstrates that the 802.11 technology is being adopted by theconsumer market. This adoption will be further catalyzed by the continueddeployment of WLANs in corporate environments; as people become morefamiliar with this technology in the workplace, they are going to recognizethe benefits that may be realized in the home."
For the year, Cisco took the top position as far as enterprise market share,with 31.1 percent of the total revenue. Agere came second with 20.4 percentand symbol grabbed 11.6 percent. Other players with strong quarters wereAlvarion, Avaya, Linksys and Buffalo, all posting quarter-to-quarter growthof more than 40 percent, respectively. In the SOHO/home segment, Linksys andBuffalo each gained nearly 3 market share points, while in the enterprisesegment, Symbol gained more than two.
