Mar, 2002 : Equinix Extends Exchange Service to Chicago IBX Center

📅 March 6, 2002 - Equinix, Inc. (equinix.com), a provider of Internet exchangeservices, today announced the availability of its Equinix GigE Exchangeservice to customers of the company's Chicago IBX center.

The service, which facilitates ISP and content peering among Equinixcustomers via a gigabit Ethernet central switching fabric, is currentlyavailable in Equinix IBX centers located in the greater Washington, D.C.,Dallas and Silicon Valley areas and is used by such companies as Yahoo!,Google, MSN, SBC and Verio for network interconnection. Traffic on theservice grew an average of 200% monthly during the fourth quarter of 2001.
Equinix GigE Exchange provides a means to leverage the aggregation ofInternet companies operating within Equinix IBX centers for traffic exchangeand transit, resulting in enhanced speed and reliability of ISP and contentpeering, the company says. Equinix GigE Exchange is offered as a bundledservice that includes access to a gigabit Ethernet central switching fabricand the necessary supporting infrastructure to enable participants toconnect to a variety of networks participating in Equinix IBX centers.
Equinix GigE Exchange allows ISPs to reduce the costs of establishingconnections to each other in multiple locations by eliminating networkbackbones and establishing a more direct route to end-users. Large ISPs canalso leverage Equinix GigE Exchange to gain access to an aggregation ofpotential transit customers, including smaller ISPs, within a centralizedlocation.
In addition, Equinix Exchange extends the IBX marketplace of networks andservice providers to a wider potential participant base of content providersand e-commerce companies for traffic exchange and transit. Content providersand e-commerce companies that host their own content or locate their contentin traditional hosting facilities, can now connect their networks to theaggregation of network providers participating in Equinix IBX centers inorder to bring content closer to a wider audience of end-users.
"Peering is the fundamental way in which all Internet traffic - from emailto video - is exchanged between content providers and ISP networks that makeup the Internet," said Jay Adelson, CTO of Equinix. "With Equinix GigEExchange, ISPs and content providers can reach their strategic peeringpartners within the same facility, greatly enhancing the efficiency andperformance of their operations and reducing the transport costs of linkingto their peering partners in multiple, disparate locations and over longdistances."
