May, 2002 : 1&1 Internet Aims to Boost .info Domain Registrations

📅 May 17, 2002 - European domain name registrar and Web hosting firm 1&1 Internet (Oneandone.co.uk -> fasthosts.co.uk) said today it would bundle free .info registrations with every domain name and Web hosting sale made in June and July, in a bid to boost uptake of the .info domain in the United Kingdom.

1&1 also said it is hoping .info registrations will be boosted by the announcement that Afilias, a consortium of 19 ICANN-accredited registrars responsible for managing the .info domain, will be releasing more than 17,000 premium .info addresses because they were obtained using the wrong copyright information.
"The idea behind .info was to open up a new generation of internet identities to both business and individuals," said Mark Beyer, Marketing Director at 1&1 Internet. "It particularly gives small businesses the ability to regain a high impact internet presence, without having to 'muscle in' on the overcrowded .com space. .info is a global domain name which gives companies an international identity and has a high perceived value."
