Jun 20, 2007 : Google To Build Facility in Iowa

📅 - Search engine giant Google (google.com) announced on Wednesday that it plans to build a data center in Western Iowa worth approximately $600 million.

According to reports, Google has already started construction on a 55-acre site in Council Bluffs, Iowa across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska. The data center is expected to create about 200 jobs with an average salary of about $50,000. The center is scheduled to open in 2009 at the Council Bluffs Industrial Foundation's new business park.

To attract Google, Iowa lawmakers say they passed a bill that would exempt electricity and capital investment requirements from sales tax for computer-related businesses. Reports say that Google will get a property tax break through 2024, but will end up paying about $65 million in property taxes over the next 15 years. Google also will pay an estimated $6 million in sales taxes over the next couple of years as it purchases building materials and will spend thousands on electricity franchise fees.

Google is in the midst of expanding its data center footprint with recent announcements that it plans on building $600 million data centers in Lenoir, North Carolina and Blythewood, South Carolina.

Google also recently announced plans to build a $600 million data center in Pryor, Oklahoma.
