We Transfer (est. 2009) is a cloud-based file transfer and collaboration platform operated by WeTransfer B.V., a Dutch company headquartered in Amsterdam. Instead of traditional web hosting with websites, databases and servers, the service focuses on moving large files quickly, securely and with minimal friction for both senders and recipients. The experience is intentionally simple: uploads happen through the browser or dedicated apps, and recipients get either an email or a download link that works without needing their own account.

The platform is organized around several subscription tiers. The Free plan allows sending files up to 3 GB, with a limited number of transfers each month, and includes features that used to be reserved for paid users such as password protection and file requests. This is enough for occasional transfers of photos, design files, short videos or office documents, and gives casual users a realistic taste of the full service without having to add a payment method.

Above that sits Starter, designed as the most affordable paid option. Starter increases the per-transfer limit dramatically (up to hundreds of gigabytes per transfer) while keeping a simple structure in terms of monthly transfer count. File requests and password protection are included here too, making Starter appealing for freelancers or small studios that do not need constant high-volume transfers but do need to push large deliverables to clients from time to time.

For heavier professional use there is Ultimate, which consolidates the higher-end features into one unlimited tier. Ultimate targets users who regularly send large volumes of content and do not want to think about storage or feature limitations. On top of that sits Teams, which takes all Ultimate benefits and adds a shared workspace, centralized billing, user management and options that scale better for multi-seat setups. At the top of the range, Enterprise opens the door to custom arrangements, advanced security and management capabilities, and direct engagement with WeTransfer’s sales team for larger organizations.

Transfers can be sent via email or as simple links, and paid plans unlock controls such as setting or modifying the expiry date, enforcing passwords on downloads and monitoring transfer history. Dedicated mobile apps and a Mac app let users check transfer status, manage their history and tweak expiry or protection settings directly from their devices.

Over time, the company has expanded beyond pure file-sharing into a broader ecosystem of tools aimed at creative workflows. Products like Collect (for saving and organizing inspiration on boards), Paper and Paste (for sketching and visual communication) and the editorial platform WePresent all sit around the core transfer service. Together they turn WeTransfer into more of a creative delivery and presentation hub than a generic storage provider or classic host.

It is important to stress that this is not a web hosting platform in the usual sense: users do not get cPanel or Plesk, databases or the ability to run server-side code. WeTransfer is best viewed as a managed content delivery channel for large files and creative assets, not a place to host websites or applications.
