walkingtoweb is a specialized Swiss hosting and cloud provider focused mainly on business infrastructure rather than mass-market commodity hosting. Its hosting activity dates back to 2000, followed by FileMaker cloud services in 2002, Kerio Connect groupware in 2007, blue.project SaaS in 2011, Nextcloud collaboration hosting in 2016, managed Synology NAS systems in 2019 and Matomo Analytics hosting in 2021. The current legal entity, walkingtoweb GmbH, was incorporated in Zürich on July 18, 2017. Thomas Hahn was the original shareholder and managing director of the GmbH, while Johann Martin Dinges later joined the management and ownership structure. The current managing directors are Thomas Hahn and Johann Dinges.

The company operates from Zürich and remains relatively small and owner-managed, with a strong concentration on customized business hosting and direct technical assistance. Its portfolio covers FileMaker Cloud, Nextcloud, Kerio Connect email, virtual Linux servers, managed Synology NAS, backup storage, web hosting, Matomo Analytics, project-management SaaS and collaboration infrastructure.

Customers receive full SSH administrator access, 30-day backups and the possibility to scale CPU, memory and storage. The virtualization environment uses clustered Proxmox VE infrastructure on Dell hardware.

FileMaker remains one of the strongest areas of specialization. Claris FileMaker Cloud is available on private Linux servers as well as dedicated Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio systems. Linux configurations support FileMaker Server 2025/26, WebDirect, OData, Data API and ODBC, together with plugins, OttoFMS, backups and full server access. Customized configurations can also include local AI/LLM servers and a standby FileMaker server at the Geneva backup location.

Dedicated macOS FileMaker hosting uses Apple Mac mini and Mac Studio hardware for customers that require an isolated physical environment. Depending on the configuration, customers receive dedicated Apple silicon hardware, multi-terabyte storage options, 10 Gbit/s networking, database backups, SSL, FileMaker plugins and full ARD/VNC access. walkingtoweb does not add a separate per-user FileMaker server charge, while customers provide their own Claris FileMaker license under the BYOL model.

Shared FileMaker Hosting remains available for older FileMaker 14-16 environments. These accounts support FileMaker client connections, WebDirect, ODBC and PHP, making the service particularly relevant to organizations maintaining legacy FileMaker installations.

Nextcloud Collaboration Cloud provides private Nextcloud instances rather than simple shared storage accounts. Standard capacities range from 25 GB to 1 TB, while customized deployments can scale as high as 100 TB. There is no artificial user limit. Customers receive full Nextcloud administrator access, can install their own applications and can use features such as encryption and file versioning. Larger configurations add OnlyOffice or Collabora Office and dedicated TURN/STUN infrastructure for Nextcloud Talk.

The Kerio Connect eMail Cloud is available both as shared groupware and on private virtual servers. Shared hosting includes email, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes, push synchronization, spam filtering, antivirus and SSL. Private Kerio servers include the Kerio Connect license together with dedicated CPU, memory and storage, full administration access and optional Proxmox Mail Gateway integration. Customized systems can support substantially larger mailbox counts and storage requirements.

Managed Synology NAS Hosting adds a less common service to the portfolio. Dedicated Synology RackStation and FlashStation systems are available with conventional disks or enterprise SSD storage, RAID protection and network interfaces reaching 10 Gbit/s. Capacity ranges from smaller business NAS installations to systems with tens of terabytes of usable storage. Customers receive full administrative access and can use Synology applications for file sharing, backups, Microsoft 365 backup, Google Workspace backup, document storage and private-cloud workloads.

The separate Backup Cloud starts at 100 GB and scales through 500 GB, 1 TB and customized configurations reaching as much as 200 TB. Version retention can extend from days to multiple years depending on the selected package. The service supports desktop computers and servers and can complement FileMaker, Nextcloud, Synology and QNAP environments. Larger configurations can also incorporate Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backups.

Matomo Analytics Hosting provides privacy-oriented website analytics. Smaller packages run on shared Matomo infrastructure, while the PLATIN package includes a private Matomo server with SSH administration. Matomo is also incorporated into higher-level shared web hosting packages.

Other specialized services include BigBlueButton and Jitsi hosting for video conferencing and online learning, together with the FileMaker-based blue.project SaaS platform for project management, tasks, invoicing, time tracking and financial administration. Domain registration and management covers more than 1,000 domain extensions through a registrar partnership.
