📄 Editorial Review

Swisscom is not a typical low-cost web host but Switzerland’s main telecom and ICT provider, majority-owned by the Swiss Confederation and employing tens of thousands of people. The group combines network, cloud, security and managed IT services for both residential and business customers, operating at a scale that most classic hosting brands cannot match.

For classic shared web hosting, there is an important shift to understand: Swisscom used to offer homepage tools, web and email hosting and a domain service for small customers. This entire "Website and Hosting" line has been phased out, contracts have been terminated and the product line ended around the end of May 2024. Bluewin e-mail addresses (the @bluewin.ch accounts) remain available, but website hosting, domain service and related mail hosting for custom domains are no longer in the active portfolio. For someone looking for a new simple shared hosting plan with domain and one-click CMS installer, Swisscom is therefore no longer a direct choice.

Where Swisscom still matters a lot for "hosting-type" services is in three main areas:
  • Cloud servers for SMEs – Dynamic Computing Services (DCS).
Dynamic Computing Services lets companies rent virtual servers from the Swisscom cloud, with compute and storage resources billed on a usage basis. Servers run in Swiss data centers under Swiss jurisdiction, can be scaled up or down in minutes and integrate with on-premises or multi-cloud environments. DCS is aimed at businesses that want to run their own applications, websites or services on flexible virtual infrastructure rather than on cheap shared hosting.
  • Enterprise hosting & managed IT – Managed Outsourcing Services.
For larger organisations, Swisscom takes over operation of complex hybrid environments: virtual, dedicated and custom servers, databases (Oracle, MS SQL, PostgreSQL and others), storage and backups, plus middleware and operating system management. This is full server and database hosting with SLAs, security services and IT service management on top. It suits banks, insurers, public administration and bigger enterprises that want to offload infrastructure while keeping strategic control.
  • Data center, colocation & housing.
Swisscom runs a network of seven high-availability data centers across Switzerland (Basel-Grosspeter, Bern-Wankdorf, Geneva-Montbrillant, Lausanne-Savoie, Lugano-Cinque Vie, Zurich-Enge, Zurich-Herdern). Customers can place their own racks or even private rooms there and combine colocation with Swisscom network, cloud and security services.

On the more "retail" side, Bluewin E-Mail remains very relevant for individuals and small offices. Bluewin provides Swiss-hosted mailboxes with IMAP and Exchange synchronisation, contacts, calendar, tasks and spam protection. There are three tiers: a free Bluewin light mailbox with 1 GB and one address, Bluewin basic with up to 5 addresses at 15 GB each, and Bluewin advanced with up to 10 addresses at 25 GB each and extra features such as AI-assisted mail functions. All paid tiers use ad-free webmail and store data in Switzerland.

Overall, Swisscom is not a simple one-click shared host anymore. It operates as a full-stack ICT provider that happens to include cloud servers, colocation and email hosting. It makes much more sense for companies that care about Swiss jurisdiction, strict data protection, hybrid architectures and long-term managed services than for someone who just wants to spin up a cheap shared plan for a small website.
