STRATO Hosting UK is the British-facing service of STRATO GmbH, one of Europe's long-established web-hosting companies. STRATO was founded in 1997 in Berlin, Germany, by Marc-Alexander Ullrich and Norbert Stangl, and has developed into a large-scale provider managing more than 4 million domains and over 2 million customer contracts.

The company has passed through several ownership changes during its history. The founders sold STRATO to Teles in 1998, and Teles later sold the company to Freenet in 2004 for €132 million. Deutsche Telekom acquired STRATO from Freenet in 2009 for €275 million, before United Internet agreed to acquire the business in December 2016 for approximately €600 million. The transaction was completed in 2017. Today, STRATO GmbH is part of the listed IONOS Group SE and ultimately sits within the wider United Internet group.

STRATO has around 350 employees, while its LinkedIn company profile places the organization within a broader 501-1,000 employee range. More than 150 trained service employees are associated with customer support operations at its Berlin headquarters.

The current UK portfolio is considerably more focused than STRATO's wider European offering. It concentrates primarily on Domain Registration and Email, Shared Web Hosting, HiDrive Cloud Storage and HiDrive Business Cloud Storage. Existing customers also continue to receive support for older products such as Website Builder, Web Shop, V-Server, Server and Plesk-based server services, although these are no longer central products in the active UK sales range.

The UK service operates in English, with prices quoted in British pounds sterling (GBP). STRATO also maintains separate localized operations for countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Sweden.

Shared Hosting is the principal conventional hosting service available to new UK customers. Four packages are offered: Basic Web, Power Web, Advanced Web and Enterprise Web. Storage ranges from 50 GB to 200 GB, while SSD database allowances increase from two databases on the entry plan to 75 databases on Enterprise Web. Every package includes a domain, unlimited traffic, SSL, email, DNS management, automatic backups and SFTP/SSH functionality.

The hosting environment is suitable for both ordinary websites and more technical projects. PHP 8.4 and Perl are supported, while larger packages add Python and Ruby. MySQL databases use SSD storage, and widely used applications such as WordPress, Joomla!, TYPO3 and Drupal can be installed through STRATO AppWizard. Git, mod_rewrite and SSH/SFTP support make the larger packages useful for developers who need more than a basic website-control interface.

Security is a strong part of the shared-hosting platform. A standard SSL certificate is included, STRATO Backup Control creates backups several times per day, and the environment includes SiteGuard, SiteLock scanning, spam and virus filtering, and DDoS protection. This makes the packages particularly convenient for small companies and WordPress users that prefer backup and basic security functions to be integrated into the hosting service.

The Domain and Email package combines registration with basic email hosting. It includes five subdomains, a digital business card and five email addresses with 2 GB of storage each, accessible through POP3 or IMAP. Domain forwarding is available, and incoming domain transfers do not carry a separate transfer-service charge. Multiple domains can be administered from the same account.

HiDrive is STRATO's personal cloud-storage platform. The current plans provide 100 GB, 250 GB or 500 GB of storage and work with Windows, macOS, mobile applications and standard browser access. Its main advantage over a simple file-storage service is broad protocol support, including (S)FTP/FTPS, WebDAV, SMB/CIFS, rsync, SCP and Git. HiDrive also supports API integration and can work with compatible QNAP and Synology NAS devices. Two-factor authentication is included.

Shared files can be protected with passwords, expiration dates and download limits. HiDrive also supports synchronization, backups and mobile access, while customer data remains on German infrastructure under European data-protection requirements.

HiDrive Business extends the storage platform for companies and teams. Current plans provide 1 TB for up to 25 users with five administrators or 5 TB for up to 120 users with 20 administrators. Both configurations include unlimited traffic and collaborative functionality through HiDrive Office.

Business storage includes additional security and management features. Data transmission uses AES-256 through SSL, stored data uses AES-128, and optional zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption uses AES-256 together with ECDH. Automatic snapshots, device backups, administrator accounts, individual access rights and team folders make HiDrive Business suitable for companies that need centrally managed German-hosted cloud storage.

STRATO's older Website Builder platform remains relevant for existing customers. The former LivePages platform was retired on April 30, 2023, with affected customers moved toward the newer SiteBuilder environment. Website Builder Pro can still be administered through STRATO Customer Login.

Existing server customers can also continue managing Linux V-Servers, Windows servers, secondary IPv4 addresses, root or Administrator access and Plesk. Eligible server installations can access Plesk over HTTPS on port 8443, while additional server resources and IP addresses are handled through the STRATO server administration environment.
