Sherweb was founded in 1998 by brothers Peter and Matthew Cassar in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. The business started on a very small scale, with its first hosting operation running from the family basement, but it gradually developed into a major Canadian cloud-services company.

Sherweb itself remains active, although traditional web hosting is no longer offered. Shared hosting had effectively disappeared from the company's portfolio around 2021, after more than two decades in which website hosting formed an important part of its business. Sherweb subsequently concentrated on cloud distribution, Microsoft services, cybersecurity, backup, managed services and tools for Managed Service Providers.

The transition happened gradually. Sherweb expanded well beyond ordinary website hosting through Hosted Exchange, collaboration services and cloud infrastructure. Its partner program began in 2012, and in 2013 the company received Microsoft's World Hosting Partner of the Year award. In 2014, Sherweb expanded its infrastructure operation further with Performance Cloud and acquired ORCS Web, a Charlotte, North Carolina company specializing in Windows managed hosting and cloud infrastructure.

By 2019, conventional hosting had become a comparatively small part of Sherweb's identity. The company increasingly concentrated on helping IT providers resell and manage cloud services, while Hosted Exchange, Microsoft 365, backup, security and infrastructure became much more important parts of the business.

During its web-hosting years, Sherweb provided Shared Hosting, Domain Registration, SSL Certificates and Hosted Exchange. One of its more useful characteristics was the availability of both Linux and Windows hosting. Linux plans suited PHP and MySQL websites, while Windows hosting catered to customers working with Microsoft technologies such as ASP and ASP.NET.

The entry-level Starter Hosting package included 1 GB of storage, unmetered traffic, five email accounts, PHP and ASP support, daily backups and multiple-domain hosting. More advanced plans considerably increased storage, email capacity, domain aliases and subdomain allowances, while MySQL databases could also be added.

Sherweb became particularly successful with Hosted Exchange. This part of the operation ultimately grew far beyond its original shared-hosting business and supported hundreds of thousands of Exchange users. Exchange hosting was complemented by SharePoint, Lync and later Skype for Business, Microsoft 365 and other collaboration products.

Domain registration was available alongside hosting for common extensions including .com, .net, .org, .ca, .biz, .info and .de. SSL certificates ranged from standard single-domain products to more expensive wildcard business certificates.

The company today is fundamentally different from the web host it was during its earlier years. Sherweb now concentrates heavily on MSPs and cloud resellers, with a marketplace covering productivity, communications, cybersecurity, backup and business continuity, infrastructure, managed services and integrations.

Managed support has also become an important part of the current business. Sherweb provides services such as helpdesk outsourcing, NOC services, migration assistance, professional services and managed security, allowing smaller MSPs to extend their technical capabilities without building every function internally.

The scale of the operation is now much larger than during its hosting period. Sherweb has grown to more than 1,000 employees, over 7,000 partners and more than 80,000 customers worldwide. In March 2026, the company secured a $125 million minority investment from Investissement Québec, intended to support further international expansion, acquisitions and organic growth.

Sherweb remains headquartered in Sherbrooke, Quebec, while serving customers and partners in North America and Europe. English and French remain the principal languages associated with its Canadian operation, with additional regional coverage for the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe.
