Power Shift is a long-established Vermont internet services company whose origins date back to 1992, when Joe Allen and Anthony Dodd formed Power Shift Computer Services in Montreal, Canada. The business initially combined computer sales with technical services before adding internet access in 1993. Joe Allen relocated the operation to Stowe, Vermont, in 1995, incorporated Power Shift Computer Services, Inc., and focused the company on web hosting, email, internet access, online communications, and related technical services.

The company later expanded into dial-up access, DSL, and fixed wireless broadband. Its broadband operations were sold in 2008, allowing Power Shift to concentrate on web hosting, private email, domain management, website development, and business internet services. The relatively small team supports a more personal service model than the highly automated approach used by many mass-market hosting companies.

The main hosting range consists of three Linux shared-hosting packages. Biz-Host Web includes 5 GB of storage, unlimited bandwidth, daily off-site backups, cPanel access, and 24/7 technical support. Biz-Host-Plus increases the storage allocation to 25 GB and adds security services through Cloudflare. Biz-Host-Max includes 50 GB of storage, premium Cloudflare protection, malware removal when required, and continuous Pingdom (pingdom.com) monitoring.

The hosting packages operate within a shared VPS environment and include WHM and cPanel management, database support, SSL functionality, traffic statistics, SEO utilities, automated backups, and one-click application installation. Daily backup copies are transferred to Amazon S3, keeping recovery data separate from the main hosting environment.

Storage allocations are modest compared with many current shared-hosting services, especially on the entry-level plan. These packages are better suited to small business websites, professional sites, and customers who value direct assistance and long-term account management more than very large disk quotas. Bandwidth is unlimited across the current range.

CloudMail private email hosting is one of the stronger parts of the service portfolio. It includes 10 GB mailboxes, attachments of up to 50 MB, webmail, calendars, contacts, tasks, notes, SSL encryption, spam filtering, and incoming and outgoing virus scanning. The service operates without advertising inside customer mailboxes, behavioral profiling, or the sale of mailbox information.

CloudMail distributes email processing across multiple systems and data centers. Every mailbox has two live copies, an additional offline copy, daily backups, and message recovery for up to 14 days. The underlying platform processes more than 50 million messages per day across over 1,000 mail servers, giving the service a much broader technical base than a single-server email installation.

Business email is also available through Microsoft 365, including Outlook, SharePoint, browser-based Office applications, and OneDrive storage. Customers should confirm the exact Microsoft license and included applications before ordering because some service information still uses terminology associated with older Microsoft products.

The SiteBuilder service combines managed hosting with WordPress and a visual drag-and-drop editor. Websites are responsive, can be edited through the WordPress administration area, and remain portable because the service does not lock the customer into a closed proprietary builder. Power Shift also provides custom web design, WordPress development, website maintenance, content-management work, social-media customization, programming, and ongoing technical changes.

Domain services include registration, renewal, DNS management, domain locking, forwarding, parking, contact administration, automatic renewal, and optional WHOIS privacy. Public registration prices depend on the requested domain extension, while WHOIS privacy is available for an additional fee.

SSL certificates are available through GeoTrust and RapidSSL. Standard RapidSSL certificates start at $79 per year, while existing hosting customers may qualify for lower-cost website security options. Certificate validation level, installation charges, and renewal pricing depend on the selected product.

Power Shift continues to support dial-up internet access through more than 6,000 access locations across the United States and Canada. Unlimited access includes five email addresses, while lower-cost accounts provide either 40 or 10 hours per month. Dial-up is now a specialized legacy service, but it can still be useful in rural locations or as emergency connectivity.

Colocated server hosting, FTP services, remote backup, and customized business solutions are available by quotation. Detailed public configurations are not provided for standalone VPS hosting, dedicated servers, or colocation packages.
