Nikhef is first and foremost a research institute, not a consumer web host. It is the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics, based at Amsterdam Science Park, with roughly half a century of history in particle and astroparticle physics and long-standing ties to international labs such as CERN. For hosting-related purposes, the relevant part is Nikhef Housing, a carrier-neutral colocation facility on the same campus. Instead of classic shared hosting, VPS, or managed servers, the "product" here is rack space and connectivity in one of the most network-dense buildings in Europe. Customers rent fractional or full 19″ racks, bring their own hardware, and plug into a very rich ecosystem of internet exchanges, carriers and research networks. In practice, it functions more as a connectivity hub and meet-me-room than as a web-hosting data center.

Nikhef Housing is regarded as a major connectivity hotspot in Europe, with hundreds of networks and organizations present. The carriers list covers many of the big backbone and transit providers, and the building is a key location for major exchanges such as AMS-IX as well as other regional IXPs. For network engineers and infrastructure operators, this is "Tier-0 territory": short cross-connects to multiple carriers, easy fibre paths to nearby commercial datacenters, and excellent peering opportunities. For an ordinary website owner, Nikhef usually sits one step behind the actual host – the place where that host’s core routers and edge equipment live.

Alongside the connectivity hub, Nikhef operates a separate science data center and a large Physics Data Processing Facility (NDPF). That infrastructure serves as the Dutch Tier-1 center for LHC experiments and stores data for projects like XENON and Virgo, while also providing high-throughput computing and storage for the national e-infrastructure. The NDPF cluster runs tens of thousands of CPU cores with multi-petabyte storage, integrated with grid middleware and a terabit-class network. These resources are aimed at research collaborations rather than commercial hosting, but they underline that Nikhef is running genuine large-scale infrastructure rather than just renting out a few racks.
