Closed user group is a private and secure network for exchanging traffic with selected suppliers, partners, or customers in a protected environment. Members can connect either via a VLAN on an existing Netnod IX port or via dedicated ports, and each closed user group can be customized by the group owner to meet specific needs. The published monthly fee for joining an existing group includes: VLAN on existing port at 1000 SEK/month, 1Gbps dedicated port at 600 SEK/month, and 10Gbps dedicated port at 6500 SEK/month. Dedicated connections also require the relevant port access fee. Membership is controlled by the group owner who must authorize new members, which is intended to prevent unauthorized parties from joining.
Netnod's Internet Exchange services are positioned as layer-2 interconnection delivered over Ethernet, with the Netnod One Port framework separating port access from the services delivered over that port. Customers can run multiple services over one physical port and manage ordering and operations through the Netnod Customer Portal.
Locations and scope: the platform spans multiple IX regions across the Nordics, including Sweden, Denmark, Finland (Helsinki) and Norway (Oslo), and it also supports remote reach options such as Remote IX, Cross-IX and partner-based Reach.

Netnod is a neutral, independent internet infrastructure operator based in Solna (Stockholm area, same city with Arelion) and fully owned by the non-profit foundation TU-stiftelsen. They have been running key parts of the Nordic internet since 1996, and today they work with a compact team of a few dozen specialists rather than at mass-market scale. The company is led by CEO Karin Ahl and is set up to reinvest profits into infrastructure, engineering, and internet-governance work instead of maximising shareholder returns.From a hosting and cloud perspective, Netnod sits "under" the usual web-hosting providers: their customers are ISPs, carriers, large hosting companies, CDNs, enterprises and public-sector networks, not end-users buying a small shared plan. - Netnod Time services – premium PTP, Netnod Time Direct and Netnod Time Remote services for financial trading, telecoms, utilities and any time-critical environment, alongside free NTP/NTS services open to the public. Time is sourced from redundant time nodes with caesium clocks, distributed across multiple sites, and is traceable to Sweden’s official time (UTC(SP)). Premium services come with SLAs such as 30 µs accuracy from UTC (Time Direct) or 1 ms accuracy anywhere in Sweden (Time Remote), and remove dependence on GNSS alone.
- Transport services – regional and metro connectivity over a DWDM network across the Nordics. These services provide wavelength-like capacity or private VLANs between IX locations and data centres, useful for hosting providers that need to tie together POPs, data centres and IX connectivity under one vendor.
- Domain management / registrar services – focused on TLD operators and organisations needing integrated DNS + domain handling, rather than retail domain sales.
A distinctive aspect is that Netnod also operates the I-root DNS root server and historically placed IX equipment in secure government telecommunications bunkers, treating the platform as critical national infrastructure. For a serious hosting or cloud provider with Nordic customers, connecting to Netnod usually means lower latency, better resilience and more predictable routing than just relying on generic upstream transit.
