Netnod is a neutral, independent internet infrastructure operator based in Solna (Stockholm area, same city with Arelion) and fully owned by the non-profit foundation TU-stiftelsen. They have been running key parts of the Nordic internet since 1996, and today they work with a compact team of a few dozen specialists rather than at mass-market scale. The company is led by CEO Karin Ahl and is set up to reinvest profits into infrastructure, engineering, and internet-governance work instead of maximising shareholder returns.

From a hosting and cloud perspective, Netnod sits "under" the usual web-hosting providers: their customers are ISPs, carriers, large hosting companies, CDNs, enterprises and public-sector networks, not end-users buying a small shared plan. Premium services come with SLAs such as 30 µs accuracy from UTC (Time Direct) or 1 ms accuracy anywhere in Sweden (Time Remote), and remove dependence on GNSS alone.
• Transport services – regional and metro connectivity over a DWDM network across the Nordics. These services provide wavelength-like capacity or private VLANs between IX locations and data centres, useful for hosting providers that need to tie together POPs, data centres and IX connectivity under one vendor.

A distinctive aspect is that Netnod also operates the I-root DNS root server and historically placed IX equipment in secure government telecommunications bunkers, treating the platform as critical national infrastructure. For a serious hosting or cloud provider with Nordic customers, connecting to Netnod usually means lower latency, better resilience and more predictable routing than just relying on generic upstream transit.

Netnod’s website is primarily in English, aimed at an international technical audience. All listed prices are in Swedish krona (SEK), normally excluding VAT and other charges.

💰 Price & Cost

Netnod’s pricing is transparent and strongly B2B-oriented. For IX services, the cost model always has two parts:

1. Port access fee (per physical port, e.g. 10G / 100G / 400G), and
2. Service fee for what runs over that port (peering capacity and any add-on services such as Remote IX or Private VLAN).

For example, a typical setup in Stockholm might combine a 10G port access fee of around 1,000 SEK/month with a 1 Gbps peering service costing around 600 SEK/month, giving a total in the mid-thousands of SEK range for a basic presence. The Remote IX add-on lets a customer use one port to peer at multiple Netnod IXes with a simple per-bandwidth monthly fee starting from a few hundred SEK for 1 Gbps and rising with capacity and the specific from/to region (for example between Stockholm and Copenhagen or Helsinki). All fees on the IX pricing page are exclusive of VAT and government charges and are typically invoiced in SEK. The General Terms specify that services are billed in advance (usually quarterly) and paid by invoice within 30 days, which in practice means bank transfer / wire as the primary payment method. There is no consumer-style "30-day money-back guarantee"; instead, compensation is SLA-based (service credits or adjustments if availability or performance targets are not met) and customers may receive pro-rated refunds of prepaid fees if contracts are terminated due to certain changes in terms or service conditions.

For a hosting company or carrier, the financial picture is therefore predictable and contract-driven, but definitely aimed at organisations comfortable with invoicing and SLAs, not at individuals paying by credit card.

🏢 Data Center

Netnod anchors its platforms in multiple carrier-class facilities and secure sites across the Nordics and layers peering, DNS and time services on top.
On the IX side, Netnod operates exchanges at:

• Stockholm – the largest IXP in the Nordics, with some of the highest traffic per peer in Europe.
• Copenhagen – bridging Copenhagen, Malmö and surrounding regions.
• Helsinki – IX presence inside major Finnish data centres (for example Telia Helsinki and Digita’s Pasila site).
• Oslo – expanding reach across Norway.
• Gothenburg – serving the southwest of Sweden.
• Sundsvall–Gävle – covering central Sweden, with the ability to connect in either city and reach both peers.
• Luleå – serving northern Sweden and the broader northern Nordic region.

The Netnod IX platform uses dual peering fabrics, multiple fibre paths and supports IPv4 and IPv6 everywhere. Customers can deploy redundant ports with physically diverse cross-connects, ensuring that even fibre cuts or switch failures do not interrupt peering. With peak traffic above 2 Tbps, over 1,400 ports and connectivity to many Tier-1 and regional providers, the infrastructure sits in the category of mission-critical national and regional peering fabric.

For DNS, the DNSNODE anycast network is spread over 80+ nodes worldwide, including nodes in Europe, North America, Asia and other regions. The service uses multiple Autonomous Systems, with at least three name servers per deployment, each having IPv4 and IPv6 addresses sourced from two different ASNs. Traffic is distributed into regional and global anycast "clouds", backed by numerous Tier-1 and transit providers. The result is a very short path to resolvers in most parts of the world and the kind of resilience expected from TLD-grade DNS. Netnod explicitly backs DNS Premium with a 100% uptime guarantee and points to a long track record of uninterrupted DNS availability.

🔨 Control Panel

Netnod operate their own in-house portals aimed at network and DNS operations teams.

• The Netnod Customer Portal / Netnod Portal is a web interface used by IX and transport customers to manage their services. It handles logins, session management and service overview, and integrates with Netnod’s back-end systems for provisioning and billing. Possible limitations and considerations:

• No retail hosting. Netnod is relevant to ISPs, carriers, large hosting providers, CDNs and critical-infrastructure users, not individuals or small businesses looking for a simple hosting package.
• B2B billing and processes. Contracts, invoices in SEK, and SLA-driven compensation fit organisations comfortable with procurement and compliance, but may feel heavy for smaller players.
• Technical entry bar. To get full value out of Netnod, a company needs network and DNS expertise internally; the platform is not designed to hide complexity in the way retail hosts do.

Overall, for serious hosting and cloud providers with Nordic traffic or DNS/time-sensitive workloads, Netnod is one of the most compelling infrastructure partners available: highly reliable, transparent, and clearly run with a long-term view. Choosing upstreams and DNS providers that use Netnod is usually a positive signal for end-customers who care about availability and routing quality.
