📄 Editorial Review
(3*) 🔧 Services: Domain RegistrationDNS (Domain Name System)⇔ Redirected from dnsnode.net
Netnod is a neutral, independent internet infrastructure operator based in Solna (Stockholm area, same city with Arelion) and fully owned by the non-profit foundation TU-stiftelsen. They have been running key parts of the Nordic internet since 1996, and today they work with a compact team of a few dozen specialists rather than at mass-market scale. The company is led by CEO Karin Ahl and is set up to reinvest profits into infrastructure, engineering, and internet-governance work instead of maximising shareholder returns.
From a hosting and cloud perspective, Netnod sits "under" the usual web-hosting providers: their customers are ISPs, carriers, large hosting companies, CDNs, enterprises and public-sector networks, not end-users buying a small shared plan. A hosting company that connects to Netnod benefits from lower latency to Nordic and Baltic networks, more routing control and access to premium DNS and time services that are almost impossible to replicate in-house.
The core product lines are:
- Internet Exchange (Netnod IX) – a family of IXPs across the Nordics where more than 200 networks exchange over 2 Tbps of traffic. Netnod runs exchanges in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Gothenburg, Sundsvall–Gävle and Luleå. Ports range up to 400 Gbps, with dual fabrics, multiple fibre paths and options such as redundant ports, Remote IX, Closed User Groups, Private VLAN, Cross-IX to AMS-IX and the Netnod One Port framework, which lets customers run multiple services over a single port.
- DNS services (DNSNODE / DNS Premium) – secondary authoritative DNS anycast targeted at TLDs, registries, large enterprises and service providers. The anycast constellation has 80+ global nodes and is built on the same platform used for the i.root-servers.net root server. The DNS Premium offer includes per-zone wholesale pricing, unlimited zones, a 100% uptime guarantee, 24/7 support, a Customer Portal, and a RESTful JSON API. There is a free 60-day trial for partner integrations.
- Netnod Time services – premium PTP, Netnod Time Direct and Netnod Time Remote services for financial trading, telecoms, utilities and any time-critical environment, alongside free NTP/NTS services open to the public. Time is sourced from redundant time nodes with caesium clocks, distributed across multiple sites, and is traceable to Sweden’s official time (UTC(SP)). Premium services come with SLAs such as 30 µs accuracy from UTC (Time Direct) or 1 ms accuracy anywhere in Sweden (Time Remote), and remove dependence on GNSS alone.
- Transport services – regional and metro connectivity over a DWDM network across the Nordics. These services provide wavelength-like capacity or private VLANs between IX locations and data centres, useful for hosting providers that need to tie together POPs, data centres and IX connectivity under one vendor.
- Domain management / registrar services – focused on TLD operators and organisations needing integrated DNS + domain handling, rather than retail domain sales.
A distinctive aspect is that Netnod also operates the I-root DNS root server and historically placed IX equipment in secure government telecommunications bunkers, treating the platform as critical national infrastructure. For a serious hosting or cloud provider with Nordic customers, connecting to Netnod usually means lower latency, better resilience and more predictable routing than just relying on generic upstream transit.
Netnod’s website is primarily in English, aimed at an international technical audience. All listed prices are in Swedish krona (SEK), normally excluding VAT and other charges.
💰 Price & Cost
Netnod’s pricing is transparent and strongly B2B-oriented. For IX services, the cost model always has two parts:
- Port access fee (per physical port, e.g. 10G / 100G / 400G), and
- Service fee for what runs over that port (peering capacity and any add-on services such as Remote IX or Private VLAN).
For example, a typical setup in Stockholm might combine a 10G port access fee of around 1,000 SEK/month with a 1 Gbps peering service costing around 600 SEK/month, giving a total in the mid-thousands of SEK range for a basic presence. Higher-capacity peering (10G, 50G, 100G, 400G) scales up accordingly, and there is also an "Unlimited" peering product where traffic is not capped, available across Sweden, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Oslo.
The Remote IX add-on lets a customer use one port to peer at multiple Netnod IXes with a simple per-bandwidth monthly fee starting from a few hundred SEK for 1 Gbps and rising with capacity and the specific from/to region (for example between Stockholm and Copenhagen or Helsinki). Cross-IX to AMS-IX in Amsterdam starts at 2,000 SEK per month, and Closed User Group connections start from roughly 600 SEK/month (plus the usual port fee) for a dedicated 1 Gbps CUG. Private VLAN pricing for metro and regional connectivity is also published as a flat monthly fee depending on 10G or 100G VLANs.
The DNS Premium / DNSNODE offer uses a per-zone wholesale model with "no lock-ins, pay for what you use", unlimited zones and a 100% uptime guarantee. Exact zone-based prices are not listed publicly, as they are usually negotiated based on volume and profile, but the structure is clear and easy to model for resellers or large enterprises. Importantly, there is a free 60-day test period for partner integrations so customers can integrate and evaluate before committing.
For time services, basic NTP/NTS is provided as a free public service, while premium options like Netnod Time Direct, Netnod Time Remote and PTP over dedicated fibre are sold on contract / quote basis, grouped into monthly subscription fees that include the CPE, installation and maintenance.
All fees on the IX pricing page are exclusive of VAT and government charges and are typically invoiced in SEK. The General Terms specify that services are billed in advance (usually quarterly) and paid by invoice within 30 days, which in practice means bank transfer / wire as the primary payment method. There is no consumer-style "30-day money-back guarantee"; instead, compensation is SLA-based (service credits or adjustments if availability or performance targets are not met) and customers may receive pro-rated refunds of prepaid fees if contracts are terminated due to certain changes in terms or service conditions.
For a hosting company or carrier, the financial picture is therefore predictable and contract-driven, but definitely aimed at organisations comfortable with invoicing and SLAs, not at individuals paying by credit card.
🏢 Data Center
Netnod anchors its platforms in multiple carrier-class facilities and secure sites across the Nordics and layers peering, DNS and time services on top.
On the IX side, Netnod operates exchanges at:
- Stockholm – the largest IXP in the Nordics, with some of the highest traffic per peer in Europe.
- Copenhagen – bridging Copenhagen, Malmö and surrounding regions.
- Helsinki – IX presence inside major Finnish data centres (for example Telia Helsinki and Digita’s Pasila site).
- Oslo – expanding reach across Norway.
- Gothenburg – serving the southwest of Sweden.
- Sundsvall–Gävle – covering central Sweden, with the ability to connect in either city and reach both peers.
- Luleå – serving northern Sweden and the broader northern Nordic region.
The Netnod IX platform uses dual peering fabrics, multiple fibre paths and supports IPv4 and IPv6 everywhere. Customers can deploy redundant ports with physically diverse cross-connects, ensuring that even fibre cuts or switch failures do not interrupt peering. With peak traffic above 2 Tbps, over 1,400 ports and connectivity to many Tier-1 and regional providers, the infrastructure sits in the category of mission-critical national and regional peering fabric.
For DNS, the DNSNODE anycast network is spread over 80+ nodes worldwide, including nodes in Europe, North America, Asia and other regions. The service uses multiple Autonomous Systems, with at least three name servers per deployment, each having IPv4 and IPv6 addresses sourced from two different ASNs. Traffic is distributed into regional and global anycast "clouds", backed by numerous Tier-1 and transit providers. The result is a very short path to resolvers in most parts of the world and the kind of resilience expected from TLD-grade DNS. Netnod explicitly backs DNS Premium with a 100% uptime guarantee and points to a long track record of uninterrupted DNS availability.
On the time services side, Netnod operates state-of-the-art time nodes in redundant pairs at multiple Swedish sites, using caesium clocks and GNSS sources to maintain a time scale traceable to UTC(SP), the official Swedish time. Free NTP and NTS-secured NTP are provided from this infrastructure, while PTP and premium Time Direct/Time Remote are delivered over dedicated fibre or secure network links to customers. The SLAs here are framed not just in terms of availability, but accuracy (for example 30 microseconds from UTC for Time Direct when co-located at a Netnod site, or 1 millisecond anywhere in Sweden for Time Remote).
Historically, Netnod’s IX hardware in Sweden has been placed in hardened government-operated telecommunications bunkers and similar secure facilities, precisely because the platform was treated as critical national infrastructure. Today, while much of the footprint is in commercial carrier-grade data centres, the overall design still follows that philosophy: geographical redundancy, high physical security, and multiple independent paths rather than relying on a single metropolitan site.
For hosting companies, this means that connecting to Netnod usually improves both latency and resilience for Nordic traffic and offers access to DNS and time infrastructures that match or exceed what large TLD registries use internally.
✍️ Customer Support
Netnod’s support model is very much NOC-centric and engineering-oriented, which fits the target audience of carriers, ISPs and large hosting providers.
Contact options include:
- General enquiries: via info@netnod and web contact forms.
- Technical & network issues: via noc@netnod and specific fault-report forms on the website.
- Abuse reports: via a dedicated abuse contact and online abuse report form.
- Phone support: through the main switchboard (+46 (0)8 562 860 00), which is typically the entry point for urgent or escalated cases.
For DNS Premium / DNSNODE, Netnod explicitly offers 24/7 support, access to world-class DNS experts, and a Customer Portal where customers can manage zones and services. The same round-the-clock posture applies to the IX and time services, which by their nature must be monitored continuously.
In addition, Netnod maintains a rich Knowledge Base and a separate Tech Centre with technical documentation, best-practice guides (for example on connecting safely to NTP servers) and detailed specifications for IX and time services. This ecosystem reduces the need for back-and-forth on routine configuration questions and helps operational teams integrate Netnod into their own procedures.
Compared with typical hosting providers, one clear difference is that support is tailored for network engineers and architects, not for beginners. There is no chat focused on "how do I install WordPress," but plenty of depth on things like BGP peering, DNS anycast design, PTP deployment and security considerations.
🔨 Control Panel
Netnod operate their own in-house portals aimed at network and DNS operations teams.
- The Netnod Customer Portal / Netnod Portal is a web interface used by IX and transport customers to manage their services. It handles logins, session management and service overview, and integrates with Netnod’s back-end systems for provisioning and billing. Existing references show the legacy portal under cust.netnod.se and the newer portal under portal.netnod.se.
- For DNS Premium / DNSNODE, the Customer Portal adds DNS-specific capabilities (zone management, configuration, statistics) and is complemented by a RESTful JSON API. The DNS platform also supports TSIG, access control lists, and two-factor authentication, so the portal becomes the control surface for a full TLD-grade DNS setup rather than a simple domain panel.
There is no exposed control panel for end-user web hosting because Netnod is not in that business. Instead, the portals are service-management interfaces for organisations that already have their own infrastructure and tooling and just need to plug into Netnod’s IX, DNS and time services.
For hosting companies, this means clean integration points for automation: the IX and DNS services can be driven through the portal and APIs, tied into internal NMS and provisioning systems, without having to work around consumer-grade interfaces.
🎯 Conclusion
Netnod is not a traditional hosting provider; it is a core internet infrastructure operator that many hosting companies and carriers quietly rely on. For a future web-hosting customer, the value is indirect: you are unlikely to buy a shared plan from Netnod, but you very much benefit if your host peers and uses Netnod’s services.Key strengths:
- Non-profit ownership and long-term orientation. Being fully owned by TU-stiftelsen and active since 1996, Netnod focuses on robustness and neutrality, not short-term profit.
- Strategic footprint. IXes across seven Nordic locations, substantial peak traffic and connections to Tier-1 carriers and CDNs make Netnod one of the most important exchange fabrics in Northern Europe.
- World-class DNS and time services. Operating both I-root and the DNSNODE anycast network, plus ultra-precise time services, puts Netnod in a small class of operators trusted for TLDs, banks, telcos and critical infrastructure. The 100% DNS uptime guarantee, large anycast footprint and strong security features (NTS, TSIG, ACLs, 2FA) are hard to match.
- Transparent, engineering-friendly pricing. Published IX pricing, clear breakdown between port and service, "pay for what you use" DNS models, no lock-ins, and free trials for DNS partners make it easy for serious operators to budget and experiment.
- Serious SLAs and design for resilience. Redundant ports, dual fabrics, government-bunker heritage, accurate time SLAs and 24/7 expert support all match what one expects from critical infrastructure, not commodity hosting.
Possible limitations and considerations:
- No retail hosting. Netnod is relevant to ISPs, carriers, large hosting providers, CDNs and critical-infrastructure users, not individuals or small businesses looking for a simple hosting package.
- B2B billing and processes. Contracts, invoices in SEK, and SLA-driven compensation fit organisations comfortable with procurement and compliance, but may feel heavy for smaller players.
- Technical entry bar. To get full value out of Netnod, a company needs network and DNS expertise internally; the platform is not designed to hide complexity in the way retail hosts do.
Overall, for serious hosting and cloud providers with Nordic traffic or DNS/time-sensitive workloads, Netnod is one of the most compelling infrastructure partners available: highly reliable, transparent, and clearly run with a long-term view. Choosing upstreams and DNS providers that use Netnod is usually a positive signal for end-customers who care about availability and routing quality.
