📄 Editorial Review
Melbourne IT is an Australian brand founded in 1996 (originating from the University of Melbourne; co-founded by Peter Gerrand, Tom Dangthanh, and Barbara Sutton) and forms part of the ASX-listed Webcentral Group. They present themselves as a long-time, locally operated provider focused on small and medium-sized businesses.Their catalog spans Shared Hosting (cPanel in Sydney), WordPress-optimised hosting, Managed VPS, Email hosting (including Microsoft 365 and custom business email), a website builder, domain registration, and SSL certificates. Traditional web design services are not offered anymore as of 2025.
Shared and WordPress plans emphasize ease of use (one-click apps, cPanel, WordPress Toolkit), Australian data residency, and marketed uptime targets up to 99.99% for WordPress. Managed VPS targets growing and high-traffic sites, highlighting enterprise-grade Dell hardware, daily backups, cPanel/WHM management, DDoS protection, and a 99.95% uptime target. The email portfolio ranges from very low-entry "Small" and "Work" tiers to Microsoft 365 Business, with security add-ons like spam filtering, MFA, antivirus, and MailGuard 365. Domains remain a core competency, with a long history as Australia’s first registrar and services for both SMBs and corporate portfolios.

😠 Melbourne IT’s responses to our reviews and complaints is misleading and deceptive, whilst also exacerbating their continued incompetence. Melbourne IT has provided different responses on the review sites and on their internal support pages, which are, in and of itself, misleading and deceptive.
Further, Melbourne IT’s responses on the review sites are different from the direct response to us.
Melbourne IT’s responses are deficient and fail, refuse or neglect to address Melbourne IT’s clear negligence and incompetence which resulted in loss and damage to our business, as a result of Melbourne IT’s failure to renew and install our SSL certificate before the expiry date. Instead of addressing and taking responsibility for the way in which Melbourne IT has caused loss and damage to our business by way of failing to renew and install our SSL certificate before the expiry date, Melbourne IT’s responses have compounded Melbourne IT’s incompetence and the misleading and deceptive conduct of Melbourne IT.
Melbourne IT has stated, in their response, that the SSL certificate “was available for [our] use and installation after provisioning”.
To be absolutely clear, during the renewal process for our SSL certificate, the SSL certificate was not available for our use and installation. During the renewal process, we did not have access to the SSL certificate, nor did we have any access to Melbourne IT’s cloud hosting to install the SSL certificate. Rather, we only obtained the SSL certificate after contacting Melbourne IT for days, subsequent to Melbourne IT’s failure to renew and install our SSL certificate before the expiry date, thereby causing a warning message to appear on our website which, in practical terms, caused our website to not be accessible as users would not proceed to access or seek to access our website.
We have never installed any SSL certificate or arranged for any IT organisation to install our SSL certificate except for Melbourne IT. It is absurd for IT Melbourne to make feeble and unintelligible excuses that the SSL certificate “was available for [our] use and installation after provisioning”.
Melbourne IT also automatically deducted the payment for the SSL certificate from our credit card on the same day as the issue date of the invoice. Melbourne IT’s statement, in their response, that they “recommend purchasing and renewing SSL certificates well in advance of expiration to avoid potential disruptions” is nonsensical and laughable given that the payment for the SSL certificate is automatically deducted from our credit card on the issue date of the renewal invoice for the SSL certificate. Melbourne IT has also dishonestly or incompetently charged us three (3) times to also renew the SSL certificate for a different domain which we own and paid for. This dishonest conduct was only discovered by us after the incompetence and negligence of Melbourne IT concerning the failure to renew and install our SSL certificate before the expiry date.
Melbourne IT has also stated that it “is typically the responsibility of the client to install [the SSL certificate]”.
At no stage, at any material time whatsoever, has Melbourne IT provided us with any SSL certificate or access for us to install any SSL certificate on the “legacy hosting platforms” for our website. Put another way, we do not have and never had access to the “legacy hosting platforms” and, by admission, an IT technician of Melbourne IT has stated that “[a]ccess to cloud hosting is restricted to senior system engineers”.
Moreover, to suggest that the “manual installation” of the SSL certificate is “typically the responsibility of the client” and that Melbourne IT’s installation of the SSL certificate is a “goodwill service” is pure nonsense and misleading or deceptive conduct.
Melbourne IT’s own website states that, “[f]or Melbourne IT’s Legacy Cloud hosting”, your “order [for the SSL certificate] will be automatically processed and your SSL will be installed”.
See the attached screenshot from the Melbourne IT website.
Melbourne IT’s response which states that the installation of the SSL certificate is a “goodwill service” is in contradistinction to their own website, which explicitly states and represents to us, consumers and the public, the procedure for the installation of SSL certificates and that Melbourne IT will install the SSL certificate, in circumstances where the website is hosted using “Melbourne IT’s Legacy Cloud hosting”. The representation made by Melbourne IT in their responses to our reviews and complaints is false, misleading, and deceptive.
Melbourne IT has continued to fail to take any responsibility and accountability for their actions. Melbourne IT has also continued to engage in misleading and deceptive conduct.
Further, to be absolutely clear, we have not been provided with any “SLA agreements or contractual agreements” in relation to the services of Melbourne IT. Melbourne IT’s responses also state that the “renewal and installation of SSL certificates” is not “part of any SLA agreements or contractual agreements”. Melbourne IT has also sought to rely on their supposed “Terms and Conditions”, in seeking to prevent their liability and our entitlement to damages, whilst also stating that the installation of SSL certificates is a “goodwill service”. By seeking to rely upon the erroneous and ill-conceived notion that the installation of SSL certificates is a “goodwill service”, it is incongruous for Melbourne IT to now assert that the “Terms and Conditions” applies in their failure, negligence, and incompetence to renew our SSL certificate which resulted in damages, interruptions, and losses to our business.
As stated above, Melbourne IT’s responses on the review sites are different from the direct response to us.
Compounding the misleading and deceptive conduct of Melbourne IT, Melbourne IT falsely represented to us directly and intentionally omitted in its response to our complaints on ProductReview and TrustPilot, amongst other things, that Melbourne IT “do[es] not [provide] compensation for loss of business etc. for any issues related to or resulting in interruptions to our hosting service”, after setting out the supposed standard terms and conditions that was and is misleading and unfair. Moreover, such supposed standard terms and conditions breach the Australian Consumer Law and the fact that Melbourne IT sought to modify, restrict or exclude the liability of Melbourne IT or our entitlement to damages or compensation is misleading and also in contravention of the Australian Consumer Law. There are very serious consequences to Melbourne IT in seeking to mislead consumers by supposed standard terms and conditions to seek to avoid liability and mislead consumers concerning their entitlements to claim damages and compensation due to the breach of statutory consumer guarantees, including that the services are required to be provided with due care and skill, and which are fit for purpose.
To reiterate, we are extremely appalled with the idiotic responses that we have received to date from Melbourne IT, particularly, the misleading and deceptive conduct, false representations and the obtuse and obstinate attitude of not taking responsibility for the incompetence of Melbourne IT.
Do not engage Melbourne IT.
Do not purchase anything from Melbourne IT.
Do not use Melbourne IT.
Avoid Melbourne IT.
MINUS ZERO STARS.

😠 PATHETIC, APPALLING, AND ATROCIOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE (ZERO STARS)
Our business has been a customer of Melbourne IT for over 10 years.
We have always purchased our SSL certificate and the consequential renewal of the SSL certificate from Melbourne IT.
Melbourne IT automatically deducted the payment for the SSL certificate from our credit card on the issue date of the invoice.
Melbourne IT was and is wholly and fully responsible for renewing our SSL certificate, which we have paid for since the inception of the SSL certificate.
Melbourne IT precluded access to our business website by failing to renew our SSL certificate, in spite of automatically deducting the payment for the SSL certificate from our credit card on the issue date of the invoice.
By failing to renew our SSL certificate, Melbourne IT caused an unsecure message and warning to appear to any user seeking to access our website.
Melbourne IT denied this and FAILED to take any responsbility for their actions. Melbourne IT also denied that their actions had led to the preclusion of access to our website.
In practical terms, any reasonable individual, upon encountering the warning message, would not access or seek to access our website.
Melbourne IT's failure to renew our SSL certificate caused users to not access our website and, in practical terms, precluded or prevented access to our website which we have also paid Melbourne IT to host.
Melbourne IT did not rectify nor remedy the failure of your organisation to renew our SSL certificate until we had to contact Melbourne IT on 11 October 2024 whereupon we were informed that it would take 30 minutes to rectify. That representation was misleading and false, resulting in wasting an extraordinary amount of our time trying to fix the problem caused by the failure of Melbourne IT to renew the SSL certificate.
Melbourne IT's customer service was and is APPALLING, PATHETIC, UNACCEPTABLE, and ATROCIOUS. Melbourne IT's failure and negligence to renew our SSL certificate has resulted in DAMAGES, INTERRUPTIONS, AND DISRUPTIONS TO OUR BUSINESS.
Melbourne IT exacerbated this issue by taking SEVERAL DAYS to resolve this issue and problem which was caused by Melbourne IT.
We lodged a complaint against Melbourne IT and their staff. We also required compensation from Melbourne IT due to their negligence and incompetence resulting in DAMAGES, INTERRUPTIONS, AND DISRUPTIONS TO OUR BUSINESS.
Melbourne IT has engaged in MISLEADING AND DECEPTIVE CONDUCT in their responses to our complaints and has continued to NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS.
Melbourne IT has FAILED TO OFFER any compensation to us.
Melbourne IT has FAILED TO RESPOND to our messages and replies to their messages.
Instead, Melbourne IT has CLOSED our ongoing support tickets. We had to open new support tickets in order to contact them.
To reiterate, Melbourne IT's customer service was and is APPALLING, PATHETIC, UNACCEPTABLE, and ATROCIOUS. Melbourne IT's failure and negligence to renew our SSL certificate has resulted in DAMAGES, INTERRUPTIONS, AND DISRUPTIONS TO OUR BUSINESS.
