lima-city is a German web hosting and cloud provider with roots going back to 2003. The service began in March 2003 as a free webspace project founded by Phillipp Röll, initially created as an alternative to the limitations of free hosting services available at the time. Domain registration followed in October 2008, while in May 2012 the project moved from the original sole-proprietor operation to the owner-managed TrafficPlex GmbH, based in Bremen, Germany.

Over time, lima-city developed from a free hosting platform into a much broader commercial provider. Paid Premium hosting was introduced in 2014, internal Cloud-VPS operations followed in 2017, and the present portfolio includes shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, free webspace, domain registration, email services, reseller and agency hosting, educational hosting, vServer and Cloud-VPS.

The standard Webhosting range consists of Mini, Starter, Business and Excellence. Storage ranges from 30 GB to 200 GB, with SSD-based storage throughout and faster NVMe resources in the highest configuration. The packages include unlimited traffic, email hosting, MySQL databases, automatic SSL certificates, backups, multiple PHP versions and bundled domains.

The hosting platform is especially suitable for PHP-based websites. PHP versions from 5.6 through current PHP 8.x releases can be selected, while PHP-FPM and OPcache are available on the commercial platform. Resource allocations scale considerably between packages, from approximately 2.5 GB RAM with Mini to 25 GB with Excellence. Business and Excellence also provide Memcached resources, which can be useful for larger WordPress installations, online stores and database-intensive websites.

Depending on the selected package, customers receive between one and ten included domains using extensions such as .de, .at, .eu, .com, .info, .biz, .net, .org and .ch. Unlimited email accounts are supported, with larger mailbox-storage allocations on the higher tiers. MySQL database capacity also increases with the package level.

Daily backups are included with paid hosting. Database backups can be retained for up to 90 days, providing useful recovery protection for commercial websites. Automatic SSL certificates are available through Let's Encrypt.

WordPress Hosting uses the same underlying shared-hosting platform while adding one-click installation, staging, plugin and theme administration, WordPress management functions and import tools. More advanced users can work with SSH, wp-cli, Git and Composer on suitable paid packages. phpMyAdmin is available for MySQL administration.

The application installer supports roughly 36 software packages, including widely used platforms such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, phpBB and MediaWiki. This makes the hosting environment suitable for more than WordPress alone.

A distinctive part of the company remains Free Webspace. lima-city built its original reputation around free hosting and still provides an ad-free option with approximately 10 GB of webspace, unlimited traffic, MySQL databases, SSL, FTP access, WordPress tools and access to the application installer. Customers are not forced to display advertising banners.

The free service differs substantially from commercial hosting. It does not include the same availability commitment or backup protection and lacks SSH/SFTP together with several advanced development functions. It is therefore better suited to personal websites, learning environments and experimental projects than to business-critical applications. File archives, backup storage, surveillance or webcam storage and similar download-heavy uses are restricted. New free-webspace accounts can also depend on account eligibility or an invitation code.

Domain Registration covers approximately 373 extensions. A domain registration includes 1 GB email storage, unlimited mailboxes and forwarding addresses, DNS management, webspace and automatic SSL when the domain is connected to lima-city hosting. Customers can manage DNS records themselves or use external nameservers. WHOIS privacy is available where permitted by the respective registry.

Domains can be purchased independently of paid web hosting. The prepaid model allows a domain to be paid for a defined registration period without requiring a conventional hosting subscription. Automatic renewal can later be enabled using supported recurring-payment methods.

For infrastructure users, vServer provides KVM-based virtual servers with dedicated allocations of RAM and SSD capacity. Current configurations range from PURE 4 with 4 GB RAM and two vCPU cores to PURE 32 with 32 GB RAM and 16 vCPU cores. Storage ranges from approximately 100 GB to 450 GB, while included traffic reaches 50 TB per month.

The vServer environment includes full root access, Linux operating-system images, SSH-key deployment, cloud-init, snapshots, backups, a rescue system, IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity and application images. Preconfigured applications include options such as WordPress, Nextcloud and WireGuard. Server connectivity reaches up to 1 Gbps, while the underlying network uses redundant switching and uplink infrastructure.

A separate Cloud-VPS platform provides a more flexible alternative for temporary systems and scalable workloads. Resources are billed hourly up to a defined monthly maximum. Configurations begin with smaller 1-vCore and 2 GB RAM instances and extend to systems with 12 vCores, 32 GB RAM and 300 GB SSD storage. Snapshots, cloning and resizing provide a more cloud-oriented workflow than a conventional fixed VPS.

Reseller and Agency Hosting is aimed at agencies, freelancers and hosting resellers. Billing is based on actual customer, storage and email usage instead of forcing every agency into a large predefined reseller package. Agencies can manage multiple client websites centrally, adjust resources, install or import WordPress websites, migrate email accounts and use temporary subdomains during development. Backups with retention of up to 90 days are also part of this environment.

A separate Education program is available for schools, universities, adult-education courses, teachers and similar organizations. Nonprofit educational projects can qualify for hosting without charge, while course environments can provide individual accounts to instructors and participants. Course administration and Single Sign-On functionality are included.

Commercial hosting infrastructure was moved in 2016 from Global Switch to Telehouse in Frankfurt. Paid hosting, mail services, virtual servers and cloud systems use the Frankfurt environment, while free-webspace systems are operated separately using infrastructure from Hetzner.

The company also has a long record in German hosting industry awards, including six consecutive "Webhoster des Jahres" awards covering 2019 through 2024.

The website and customer platform are primarily available in German. No complete multilingual storefront exists, so international customers should expect most product information, account management and documentation to remain German-focused.
